Budget kitchen trends, from benches to open shelving
The kitchen often serves as the heart of a home, a space for gathering, cooking, and eating. A new kitchen ranks high on many people's wish lists, with social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok showcasing millions and billions of posts and views respectively on kitchen design. While high-end remodels can be costly, it's possible to dramatically refresh a kitchen without a hefty price tag through clever tweaks.
One popular and budget-friendly trend is the integration of café curtains. These short curtains can soften the appearance of cabinetry, hide appliances like washing machines, and add a tactile element to the kitchen. Materials like washed linen or even spare sheer fabric can be used, with costs for DIY options starting as low as £4 for poles. Another simple yet impactful change involves bench seating. Adding a bespoke cushion, perhaps with a stripe pattern to hide stains, can introduce color, texture, or pattern to the space. Fabric remnants from surplus high-end materials can be sourced for a more economical approach, or upholstery services can be used.
Decorating with crockery is another effective way to add character and a sense of homeliness, especially for those who collect unique or handmade pieces. Plates can be displayed on walls using affordable wire plate hangers, or on country-style dressers and wall-mounted plate racks. For flooring updates, peel-and-stick tiles or vinyl stickers offer a quick and customizable refresh, ideal for renters or those seeking instant impact. These come in various patterns, including Moroccan-style and terrazzo designs, with options under £25 for a pack of ten. Large washable rugs can also define open-plan kitchens and conceal imperfect floors.
Concealing unsightly white goods can significantly improve a kitchen's aesthetic. Methods include vinyl-wrapping appliances or using low-tack paper like Mask It to apply a film over existing surfaces, which can then be painted. Painting existing items is a cost-effective way to add a pop of color or give new life to old furniture. For instance, painting an old stool with leftover paint or transforming vintage wooden cabinets with chalk paint (which requires no sanding or priming) can dramatically change their look. Many brands offer a wide range of colors suitable for these projects.
Adding open shelving is a transformative step that can replace upper cupboards, offering open storage to display kitchenalia and objects. Shelving can be custom-made from recycled wood by a local carpenter or assembled using scaffold brackets and cut planks from a timber merchant. Even more budget-friendly options include ready-made pine shelf kits. For those hesitant about a full repaint, painting the inside of cupboards can introduce a secret splash of color, revealed only when the doors are open. This can create a calm, minimal environment when closed and a lively, appetising one when open. Practical alternatives include lining cupboard bottoms with lino for easy cleaning.
Splashbacks can be both practical and decorative. Colorful Perspex sheets, cut to size, offer a contemporary look, while marble offcuts can provide a touch of luxury at a relatively low cost. Instead of a full kitchen overhaul, replacing cupboard doors can give the appearance of a new kitchen without significant expense. For glass doors, reeded glass film adds style and provides a degree of concealment. A quicker and more subtle update involves changing cupboard hardware, such as handles and knobs, which can personalize basic units and elevate the overall design. Finally, attention to small details like light switches and power sockets can enhance a kitchen's finish, with options like Bakelite switches and sturdy towel hooks adding both style and utility. Freestanding larders, while desirable, can be substituted with upcycled dressers or portable vegetable trolleys and stacking baskets for budget and space-conscious solutions. Accessories, such as colorful chopping boards, toasters, jugs, and bold tablecloths, offer an instant way to infuse personality and character into the kitchen.
