6 quick tips to find the right furniture fabric

Choosing the right fabric to reupholster furniture can be a challenging task given the multitude of options available. The process involves selecting a material that will be seen, sat on, and touched daily, making the decision crucial for long-term satisfaction. Relying solely on online browsing for fabric selection is often insufficient because digital platforms cannot accurately convey texture or true color, which are essential tactile and visual qualities. Furthermore, issues such as fabric being backordered after extensive online searching can lead to frustration, and once fabric is cut, it typically cannot be returned. To navigate these complexities and ensure a satisfactory outcome, Greg Bonk, owner of Calico Corners, a specialized fabric, furniture, and interior design store in Brookfield, offers six practical tips. His primary recommendation emphasizes the importance of in-person shopping. Physically visiting a store allows individuals to see and touch fabrics directly, enabling a more accurate assessment of their quality and feel. It is also advised to observe fabric samples in natural daylight, as artificial store lighting can distort true colors, potentially leading to misjudgments. Another critical piece of advice concerns the use of mobile phones for color matching. Bonk notes that phone screens often misrepresent colors, leading to discrepancies between the digital image and the actual fabric. Instead of relying on phone photos, customers are encouraged to bring physical items from their home, such as paint samples or throw pillows, to the store. These tangible objects provide a more accurate reference for building a cohesive design scheme within the existing room. The process of selecting fabric may require multiple visits to the store. Bonk suggests planning for two or three trips to thoroughly evaluate options before making a final decision. Calico Corners, for instance, offers fabric sample books that customers can take home, allowing them to assess how different materials look and feel within their own environment. The store also stocks many bolts of fabric from which staff can cut small snippets for home evaluation. Customers should also be aware of potential supply chain issues, which can cause delays in fabric delivery. Even when ordering in-store, lead times of a month or more are possible, as retailers often have limited control over external logistical challenges. In such cases, opting for fabrics that are already in stock might be a more attractive solution to avoid prolonged waiting periods. Finally, patience is highlighted as an important virtue during this process. The retail industry, like many others, can experience staffing shortages due to unforeseen circumstances, such as employees needing to quarantine. Bonk, who has owned Calico Corners since 1984, notes that such challenges are unprecedented in his experience, underscoring the need for understanding and flexibility from customers. These guidelines aim to mitigate common pitfalls and enhance the overall experience of selecting furniture fabric for reupholstering projects. #FurnitureFabric #HomeDecor #InteriorDesign #ReupholsteryTips #FabricSelection #ShoppingInPerson #ColorMatching #SupplyChain #FurnitureFabric #HomeDecor #InteriorDesign #ReupholsteryTips #FabricSelection #ShoppingInPerson #ColorMatching #SupplyChain
