Your Deck Is About to Be the Best Room in the House

This article provides five key strategies for transforming an outdoor living space into a luxurious and functional extension of the home, drawing advice from six designers affiliated with Decorating Den Interiors. The first recommendation emphasizes the importance of selecting appropriate, weather-rated materials for furniture, rugs, and lighting. Nashville designer Bohnne Jones highlights the use of synthetic rattan-look chairs instead of real rattan and outdoor-rated, light-fast, and mildew-resistant cushions and threads, especially for humid climates. She also advises against leaving ceramic pots outdoors in freezing temperatures, suggesting weather-appropriate alternatives like glazed terra-cotta, metal, and plastic planters. The second strategy focuses on accurately assessing and not overestimating the outdoor space. Krista Shugars of KD Designs recounts how her team carefully planned a vast pool area in Naples, Florida, to accommodate multiple functions such as an outdoor kitchen, dining area, TV sitting area, and firepit. This involved meticulous measurements and 3D rendering to ensure comfortable circulation and proper viewing distances, especially in spaces with wide-open views that can be visually deceptive. The third piece of advice centers on maintaining a cohesive color scheme between indoor and outdoor areas. Kris Miller, an Austin, Texas-based designer, stresses that the outdoor palette should complement the indoor decor to avoid a visual disconnect. She illustrates this by describing a pool area that incorporated blues, taupes, grays, and golds to match the home's interior, using neutrals as a base with blue accents to tie into the owners' art collection. Miller also warns against mixing contrasting design styles, such as modern interiors with traditional wicker outdoor furniture. The fourth point addresses the level of upkeep homeowners are willing to commit to. Barbara Elliott and Jennifer Ward-Woods of The Sisters and Company designed a black and white balcony, a color scheme that requires diligence in outdoor settings. They ensured furniture covers were available and cushion materials could be bleached. They also recommend selecting heavy, wind-resistant furniture and minimizing small, easily displaceable accessories, opting instead for pillows that can be brought inside, and heavy plants or lanterns. Finally, the article encourages homeowners not to be discouraged by the lack of a natural scenic view. Jennifer Psynack of Design Concept, whose octagonal screened deck in the Finger Lakes region boasts stunning views, suggests creating focal points with plants, rocks, water features, and statues for those without a natural vista. She advises layering textures with various plants and introducing elements like waterfalls or birdbaths. Psynack also notes that books and tableware can be used as decorative elements if they are regularly brought indoors. #OutdoorLivingSpace #HomeDesign #DeckDecoration #PatioDesign #ColorScheme #MaterialSelection #SpacePlanning #OutdoorFurniture #DecoratingTips #OutdoorLivingSpace #HomeDesign #DeckDecoration #PatioDesign #ColorScheme #MaterialSelection #SpacePlanning #OutdoorFurniture #DecoratingTips
