What to Plant in a Hot, Dry Year? Succulents, of Course (Published 2020)

In a recent newsletter, garden designer Katherine Tracey showcased her use of succulents in containers, sparking reflection on their suitability for hot, dry conditions. Unlike traditional annuals that require frequent watering, succulents like Echeveria, Senecio, Sempervivum, and certain Sedum varieties offer a long-lasting display with minimal care. A key advantage is their ability to be brought indoors in cooler climates like the Northeast, and even if they stretch or sulk during winter, cuttings can be harvested to start new plants in the spring or repurposed for decorative arrangements. The article highlights an innovative use of succulents in a Halloween-themed pumpkin arrangement, where cuttings are placed on a sphagnum moss bed atop the pumpkin rather than inside a carved-out space, demonstrating their versatility beyond typical garden settings. Katherine Tracey and her husband, Chris Tracey, founders of Avant Gardens, specialize in succulents due to their low-maintenance nature and extended visual appeal. Tracey defines succulents as plants with fleshy leaves, stems, or roots capable of storing water for long periods. Having collected over 400 types over 25 years, she emphasizes that many are hardy only in warmer zones, requiring trial and error to cultivate successfully in New England. For beginners, she advises against using regular potting soil, which retains too much moisture. Instead, a commercial cactus or succulent mix is recommended to prevent overwatering, a common cause of succulent demise. Watering should be infrequent, only when the plants show signs of slight dryness, and fertilization should be minimal, primarily in spring with a dilute organic fertilizer. Over-fertilization can lead to weak, leggy growth. Tracey, a former painter and textile designer, approaches succulent container design with an artistic eye, often matching plant size and color palette to the pot. She likens mature succulent combinations to tapestries. For novices, she suggests starting small, with a 6-7 inch pot, and packing plants tightly, similar to a floral arrangement, as succulents grow slowly. This allows for easy trimming or repositioning if needed. Her own garden features succulents as focal points in tall containers or on pedestals. The world of succulents can be complex due to frequent hybridization and mislabeling. Tracey recommends starting with compact jade plants (Crassula), mini-jade (Portulacaria), string of pearls (Senecio rowleyanus), or string of dolphins (Senecio peregrinus) for trailing effects. For rosette shapes, tender Echeveria or hardy Sempervivum are good choices, with varieties like Forest Frost offering year-round visual appeal. Creeping sedums, such as the hardy Sedum album (Coral Carpet, Red Ice) and Angelina, or tender Sedum japonicum, Sedum dasyphyllum, and Sedum clavatum, provide diverse textures and colors. For vertical elements in larger designs, she suggests Euphorbia tirucalli Sticks on Fire or Senecio cylindricus, or even non-succulent partners like Phormium that tolerate dry conditions. Succulents are also excellent for centerpieces, lasting longer than cut flowers without requiring water. This provides a sustainable way to repurpose outdoor succulents at the end of the season. The article details how to create succulent pumpkin arrangements, involving removing the pumpkin stem, applying spray glue to the top, nesting sphagnum moss, and then securing succulents with tacky glue and floral pins. The same technique can be adapted for other vessels, using a “pincushion” material like grapevine, chicken wire, or a cellulose sponge beneath the moss instead of floral foam, which is being phased out due to microplastic pollution. Cuttings from these arrangements can eventually root and be potted, extending their life and offering new plants. #Succulents #ContainerGardening #LowMaintenancePlants #DroughtTolerant #HomeDecor #GardeningTips #PlantCare #SustainableGardening #Succulents #ContainerGardening #LowMaintenancePlants #DroughtTolerant #HomeDecor #GardeningTips #PlantCare #SustainableGardening
