The Best Couch Material for Dogs — Experts Share the Fabrics That Can Handle Paws and Claws
Choosing the right couch material is essential for pet owners to ensure longevity and maintain the aesthetic appeal of their furniture. When dogs are part of the household, specific upholstery options are better suited to resist wear and tear, as well as simplify cleaning. Interior design experts recommend three primary types of couch materials for homes with dogs: leather, performance fabrics, and microfiber.
Leather is a highly recommended choice due to its durability and ease of cleaning. Distressed leather, in particular, is favored because minor scuffs and scratches from dog claws can enhance its character, contributing to a unique patina over time. However, experts advise against soft or light-colored leathers, which are more prone to damage. Maintaining trimmed dog nails is also suggested to minimize deep scratches. Leather is easy to wipe down, preventing pet hair and odors from becoming trapped, making it a low-maintenance option for pet owners.
Performance fabrics are another top pick, having significantly advanced in quality and aesthetics over the past decade. These fabrics are typically constructed from synthetic fibers, with solution-dyed synthetic yarns being particularly durable and resistant to cleaning challenges. Brands like Sunbrella and Revolution Fabrics, often made from solution-dyed acrylic, are noted for their wide range of textures and colors, and their ability to be bleach-cleaned. Other effective options include olefin and UV polyester. These materials are designed to withstand frequent use and cleaning, making them ideal for active households with pets.
Microfiber, a synthetic material, also stands out for its suitability in homes with dogs. Its tightly woven structure makes it resistant to scratching and allows for easy removal of pet hair. Microfiber couches are often machine washable and highly durable, contributing to their low-maintenance appeal. The tight weave prevents pet hair from clinging, and the material can be easily vacuumed or wiped clean.
Conversely, several couch materials are strongly advised against for pet owners. Cotton and linen sofas are absorbent and can easily stain or retain odors. Velvet and silk, while luxurious, are delicate and susceptible to damage from claws, showing marks and being challenging to clean. Velvet and mohair also tend to attract and hold onto pet hair. Chenille and wool are also not recommended, as their textured surfaces and natural fibers can trap dog hair, making cleanup difficult.
