If This One Spot Isn't Organized, Your Whole Home Looks Cluttered, Organizers Say
Maintaining an organized home can be an overwhelming task, often undermined by daily maintenance habits that can quickly lead back to disarray. Instead of engaging in a continuous cycle of decluttering, focusing on a few critical areas can significantly impact the overall tidiness of a home. Professional organizers Barbara Brock and Mindy Godding highlight the entryway as the single most important space to keep organized, asserting that its condition sets the tone for the entire house.
The entryway serves as the home's first impression, making its organization paramount. Both experts agree that a messy front hall often indicates a similar state throughout the rest of the dwelling. Given that entryways are high-traffic areas and natural drop-off points for items like outerwear, keys, wallets, and glasses, keeping them tidy can be challenging. However, several strategies can help maintain order.
Optimizing the entryway closet is crucial. Many people underestimate the storage potential of this space. Utilizing vertical space by installing hooks for backpacks, jackets, and handbags keeps items off the floor and within easy reach. Maximizing the closet also involves using door-mounted storage, wall-mounted baskets, and ensuring appropriate placement of hooks. Brock suggests hanging coats by length to allow for floor-based storage solutions like baskets, bins, or shoe risers underneath. It's also important to declutter the entryway closet regularly, removing items that do not belong there, such as unused tote bags, board games, or mismatched cold-weather gear, to prevent it from becoming a 'junk closet'.
Beyond the closet, a designated drop tray for keys, wallets, and glasses is a simple yet effective solution to contain these small items, reduce clutter, and prevent misplacement. For homes with a 'no-shoe' policy, visible shoes can still contribute to visual clutter. Therefore, having accessible shoe storage, such as a shoe rack, tray, or even a basket for casual footwear like sandals or children's shoes, is essential.
In addition to the entryway, professional organizers identify other key areas that, if disorganized, are likely to be noticed by guests and impact the home's overall appearance. A messy kitchen, for instance, detracts from the dining experience regardless of the quality of food served. Organizers emphasize the importance of cleaning up the kitchen and putting items away before going to bed, preventing the unpleasant sight of dirty dishes in the morning.
An unmade bed is another significant contributor to a cluttered appearance. As the largest piece of furniture in a bedroom, an unmade bed immediately conveys disorganization and chaos. Making the bed daily offers visual calmness and makes the entire room appear tidier, even if the door is simply closed to hide it. Finally, cluttered floors are a major issue. While messy surfaces are problematic, clearing items from the floor can instantly transform a room. This doesn't necessarily involve deep organizing but rather a quick straightening, such as repositioning a pillow or picking up misplaced items, which can be achieved in about fifteen minutes and significantly improve the room's perception of tidiness.
