Design has gone to the dogs (and cats)

The increasing integration of pets into interior design is a growing trend, spurred partly by increased time at home during the pandemic. Home furnishings retailer IKEA launched its UTSADD collection, comprising 29 pet-focused products, developed with input from veterinarians, pet product experts, and a panel of cats and dogs. The collection, which focuses on eating, sleeping, playing, and hiding, aims to offer easy-to-clean, durable products that seamlessly blend into any home. Interior designers are observing a significant rise in pet-related requests from clients. Jane Synnestvedt, a designer with offices in Birmingham and Jacksonville, Florida, notes the need for designated storage for pet items such as leashes, toys, food, and grooming products, often incorporated into built-in cabinets, drawers, or mudroom cubbies. Integrated crates and kennels are also in high demand, with clients moving away from bulky, unsightly options towards custom cabinetry that disguises crates as furniture pieces or integrates them into mudroom benches or laundry areas. Some homeowners are even creating entire kennel areas with custom beds and outdoor access. Dedicated pet spaces are becoming more common, including built-in feeding stations in kitchens or mudrooms with pull-out drawers for food storage and recessed water bowls to prevent spills. Grooming areas in laundry rooms or mudrooms, equipped with washing stations and storage for supplies, are also popular. Designers like Nicolette Martin of Nicolette Design Group report frequent requests for doggy showers in mudrooms and easy-to-clean eating surfaces. Margaret Skinner of Margeaux Interiors highlights the trend of incorporating hidden food stations, eating nooks, and integrated kennel and litter box solutions into cabinetry. Amanda Sinistaj at Ellwood Interiors mentions pet zones in mudrooms with built-in water bowls, leash storage, pull-out snack drawers, and hidden kitty litter units with exhaust fans. Designers attribute this trend to the desire for homes that are both beautiful and functional for all occupants, including pets, who are increasingly viewed as family members. Ruth Casper of Ruth Casper Design emphasizes durability, organization, and pet comfort, noting demand for pet washes, resilient flooring, and custom storage for pet supplies. Nicole Withers of Jones-Keena & Co. points to the evolution of performance fabrics, making it easier to select stylish, durable, and easy-to-maintain options for pet-friendly homes. Tile, engineered hardwood, vinyl, and faux leather are recommended flooring materials due to their resistance to wear and tear and ease of cleaning. The trend extends beyond functional pet accommodations to decorating with pet-inspired elements. Animal prints and fabrics featuring canine and feline motifs are gaining popularity, adding playful accents to home decor. Designers anticipate a continued increase in dedicated pet spaces, advanced storage solutions, and super durable finishes. The future of pet-inclusive home design may also see smart home technology for pets, multi-functional furniture, and an increased focus on sustainable and pet-safe materials. The sentiment among designers is that pets are an integral part of family life, and their comfort and needs will continue to influence home interior design. #PetFriendlyDesign #HomeInteriors #IKEA #CustomCabinetry #PetStorage #MudroomDesign #PerformanceFabrics #PetInspiredDecor #SmartHomeTechnology #PetFriendlyDesign #HomeInteriors #IKEA #CustomCabinetry #PetStorage #MudroomDesign #PerformanceFabrics #PetInspiredDecor #SmartHomeTechnology
