Yuji Kimura Design has completed House K, a three-storey residential project located in a busy Tokyo neighborhood. The primary design challenge was to reconcile the client's desire for private outdoor terraces with the need for privacy on a street with significant traffic. To achieve this, the architects implemented a design strategy that involves a tall, white perimeter wall effectively shielding the house and its outdoor spaces from public view. The house is conceived as an elongated box extending from east to west, a configuration that optimizes natural light exposure. The southern facade incorporates the bedrooms and terraces, strategically positioned to receive ample sunlight throughout the day. To further enhance privacy on these terraces while still allowing light and air, slatted timber and translucent panels are used as screening elements, preventing direct views from passersby. In contrast, the northern facade features smaller, horizontal slit windows. These openings are designed to bring natural light into specific areas such as the ground-floor living room and toilet, and the first-floor bathroom and hallway, without compromising the overall sense of seclusion. Upon entering House K, residents are greeted by a functional and uncluttered entrance hall on the ground floor. This space integrates full-height cabinets with recessed handles, creating a streamlined appearance and maximizing storage efficiency. The entrance hall transitions into an open-plan living area, which includes a kitchen, dining room, and a study area. A notable design detail in the ground-floor toilet is the full-height door, which, when closed, blends seamlessly with the wall, contributing to the minimalist aesthetic. Connecting the different levels of the house is a steel staircase with open timber treads. This design choice is not merely aesthetic; it also facilitates the flow of natural light between the upper and lower floors, enhancing the brightness of the interior. Giselle Go and Philippe Terrien, co-founders of the Japanese clean beauty brand DamDam, embarked on a search for a tranquil weekend retreat near Tokyo. Their initial criteria included proximity to the city, high privacy, and a mountainside location. After a prolonged search, a friend, Naoko Kawamura, introduced them to a 75-year-old property overlooking the Pacific Ocean and Mount Fuji. The house, initially dilapidated, held historical significance as it was built by American postwar photojournalist Horace Bristol, known for his work on John Steinbeck’s 'Grapes of Wrath' and for magazines like 'Life,' 'Time,' and 'National Geographic' in the 1950s. Recognizing the challenges of renovating such an old property, especially one situated on protected heritage land, the couple enlisted the expertise of Motosuke Mandai of Mandai Architects. Their vision was to revive the house while preserving its past and integrating modern comforts. A significant part of the renovation involved working closely with the local temple that oversees the protected area to ensure all regulations were met. The couple meticulously retained original elements like wood beams, ceilings, and shoji screens. When original features such as the wood floors or the wood-burning stove could not be salvaged, they were replaced with identical materials to maintain the house's authentic character. The entrance to the home functions as both an entryway and a mudroom, where it is customary to remove shoes and don soft house slippers, a Japanese tradition. This space features a Hang-It-All coatrack by Eames for Herman Miller, a stool by Timber Crew, and a washi tray by Craig Ancelowitz, both for DamDam Atelier. Artwork includes a calligraphy on canvas by Mikiko Kayama and a wall sculpture by Yuichiro Kobayashi. The living room, a favorite indoor spot for the couple, boasts an Akari 21A pendant light by Isamu Noguchi, an Archimoon Soft table lamp by Philippe Starck for Flos, and Glo-ball table and floor lamps by Jasper Morrison for Flos. This room is furnished with an Akari 1AG table lamp by Isamu Noguchi, an antique rattan table, a vintage lounge chair, and a Malawi chair from Couleur Locale. The decor reflects the multicultural backgrounds of Giselle, who is Filipino, and Philippe, who is French, blending midcentury-modern design, vintage finds, Japanese crafts, and textiles from their travels. The furniture, much of which was crafted by artisans known to them, imbues the home with a personal touch. The only fully enclosed room is the bedroom, which offers a private sanctuary feel, without glass windows on the ranma. Kichi Architectural Design has completed the House of Kubogaoka, a cube-shaped residence in Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan. The structure utilizes a timber framework, but its front and rear facades are finished with plaster, providing the appearance of solid concrete construction. In contrast to these two facades, the side walls of the house are painted white. According to the architects, the use of white on the side walls creates a clear visual distinction against the basic mortar color of the other exterior walls. The main entrance of the house is created by an apparent cut-away section at one corner of the cube. Upon entering, a corridor extends directly through the house to a terrace located at the rear. This corridor features a dark tiled floor, which the architects liken to the traditional earth floors found in older Japanese homes. This design element aims to evoke a sense of historical Japanese dwelling immediately upon entry, extending the concept of an 'earth-floored room' to the outdoor yard beyond. The interior of the house introduces varying floor levels and materials to define different spaces. The main living area of the first storey is raised by two steps from the entrance corridor. This change in elevation is accompanied by a transition in flooring material, moving from the dark tiles of the corridor to a wooden surface. Further into the house, this wooden surface then gives way to a grid of tatami mats, forming a traditional Japanese room. The architects state that this combination of tatami and tiles harmonizes Japanese and Western interior styles within the residence. The traditional Japanese room is designed with sliding partitions, allowing it to be separated from an adjacent long, narrow space. This adaptable space serves multiple functions as a combined living room, dining room, and kitchen. This layout facilitates an open-plan living environment while retaining the option for privacy or distinct area definitions through the use of traditional sliding screens. An outdoor dining area is integrated into a recess at the back of the house. A central room, measuring 4.5 x 5.5 meters with a ceiling height of 4 meters, forms the core of the house. The design consciously integrates the concept of a courtyard house, where internal spaces are protected while maintaining a connection to the outside. Unlike typical courtyard houses that are often closed off from the exterior, this residence opens sensitively towards the surrounding berm, ensuring privacy for the residents while remaining approachable to neighbors. These considerations informed the core architectural concept of the home. The residence is structured around a large spiral staircase, or caracole, featuring multiple nooks and crannies. This central element includes an atrium with a skylight, allowing natural light to penetrate the interior. The staircase steps are designed with varied rises, based on the body measurements of the cats, resulting in 23 distinct floor levels. This stratification creates fine layers of temperature zones, enabling the cats to move freely and find their preferred climate throughout the day. The run of each step is generously set at 900 millimeters, providing ample space for cats to hide, maintain distance, or rest undisturbed. The caracole's design draws inspiration from a tamasudare, a traditional Japanese bamboo screen, influencing its loosely woven and adaptable structure. This exposed architectural feature also addresses Kamakura's highly humid climate, complementing the split-level design. A buffer space, one meter above ground level, is integrated between the raft foundation and the floor. This area facilitates airflow and accommodates hot water pipes for floor heating, contributing to effective temperature and humidity control within the house. Around the caracole, various functional spaces are arranged on different levels, including a bedroom, guest room, studio, kitchen, dining room, and bathroom. Fall prevention handrails in the atrium are inspired by Kamakura's mountain views and are crafted from delicate stainless steel. One section of the circular steps extends backward, leading to a window positioned at cat eye level, providing an outdoor view. The final step of the staircase is elevated to the height of a human chair, creating a porch-like area for the cats. The house's exterior form comprises two interlocking L-shaped volumes with shed roofs of varying angles. This configuration simplifies construction and harmonizes with the natural landscape of Kamakura. The architect also intentionally designed window placements and heights to allow passersby to observe the cats, integrating them into the architectural exterior and local scenery. In terms of landscape design, the garden is divided into two main zones: an Approach Zone leading to the entrance and front garden, and a Terrace Zone with a wooden deck and kitchen garden. This led to the implementation of a design featuring staggered floors, aiming to achieve spatial continuity and facilitate smooth vertical circulation throughout the residence. To enhance the sense of spatial continuity, the architects incorporated a slab above the living room that folds upwards along a slanted line. Additionally, a portion of the uppermost slab was partially raised to create a large kitchen terrace opening, further connecting indoor and outdoor spaces. These design choices resulted in unique features that encourage diverse activities within the home. For instance, the sloped floor of the terrace is suitable for sunbathing, while the area beneath the raised section of the top slab forms an alcove that can be utilized for sleeping. The architectural compositions extended to other design elements, including platforms integrated at a diagonal angle alongside the stairwell that navigates between the staggered floors. Correspondingly, storage units on the opposite wall also adopted a diagonal angle. A triangular light garden was positioned at the end of a large opening in the living room, establishing a diagonally oriented axis that contributes to a more spacious feel within the interior. The numerous diagonal lines throughout the 'Diagonal House' were carefully considered to optimize visibility and establish interconnected relationships between various spaces.
