How to Get the High-End Flooring Look You See in LUXURY Homes
Flooring trends for 2025 are shifting towards more grounded, versatile, and enduring styles, moving away from the maximalist choices seen in 2024. Adam Vester, Senior Director of Design at Mohawk, a prominent flooring company, emphasizes a future focused on warmth, natural aesthetics, and timeless, well-crafted materials, highlighting a preference for smart and lasting choices over fleeting trends. Hannah Nelson, Manager of Product Management at Mohawk, adds that practicality, including quality, durability, and ease of cleaning, remains a crucial factor for homeowners. The article highlights eight key flooring trends for 2025 that blend longevity with style, indicating significant shifts in home interior design preferences.
One major trend is the resurgence of checkerboard tile, appearing in various materials like marble and ceramic, and making a bold impact in diverse spaces from foyers to living areas. Designer Meghan Jay suggests painting existing flooring to achieve this look creatively and affordably. Another notable trend is the carpet comeback, featuring rich textures and patterns, especially cut and loop pile designs. Russ DeLozier, President of The Carpet and Rug Institute, notes a renewed popularity for carpet, emphasizing its sound insulation, warmth, and new pet-friendly technologies that offer waterproof backings, odor and snag resistance, and pet-mess warranties.
Biophilic design continues to influence flooring choices, with a focus on sustainable materials such as cork, natural stone, and responsibly sourced hardwoods. Interior designer Elizabeth Ego of Agape Design Group points to an increased demand for FSC-certified or reclaimed woods and low-VOC finishes that underscore the natural beauty of materials like European oak. This trend reflects a deeper appreciation for the origin and manufacturing process of materials, promoting a luxurious yet mindful approach to home design.
Large-format tiles are also gaining traction, extending beyond modern spaces to create expansive and elegant interiors with fewer grout lines. These tiles, available in matte, glossy, or stone-look finishes, offer versatility in pattern and application. Luxury Vinyl Planks (LVPs) are experiencing a reimagining, now recognized as a high-performance option that convincingly mimics natural hardwood. Vester explains that hyperrealistic grain patterns and subtle color variations contribute to LVP's natural appearance, providing a durable, water-resistant, and budget-friendly alternative.
The trend of "Golden Hour Woods" signals a departure from cool grays and millennial gray tones. Joyce Van Waeleghem, Mohawk’s Senior Director of Design, predicts a shift towards warmer wood colors like honey, chestnut, and caramel, infusing homes with comfort and timelessness. This warm palette is also evident in tile selections, with “colors of sand” being identified as a top tile trend for 2025 by Coverings, a leading ceramic tile and natural stone showcase.
Terrazzo is enjoying a renaissance due to its speckled aesthetic, chic appeal, and durability. This composite material, made from chips of marble, quartz, and glass, offers personality and texture, and its versatility allows it to align with several other 2025 trends, including large formats, sustainability, and warm tones. Lastly, oversized wood planks are becoming popular, with Vester noting that wider and longer planks contribute to a sense of openness and elegance. The National Wood Flooring Association's survey also indicates a demand for longer, wider boards, along with parquet, herringbone, and chevron patterns, which add visual interest and sophistication to any room by minimizing visual breaks.
