How to Cheat Your Way to DIY Concrete Countertops That Look Like Stone

The article details designer Cristy Lee McGeehan's DIY project to install concrete countertops, including a waterfall island, in her Hudson Valley kitchen. Despite initial reservations about concrete's durability given her passion for cooking, McGeehan was swayed by its aesthetic appeal. She and her husband, Colan, tackled the ambitious project, mixing over ten 50-pound bags of concrete by hand and utilizing Z Counterform molds for a cast-in-place surface. One key lesson learned was the benefit of strategic shortcuts. The couple, who admit they are not carpenters, used two IKEA box cabinets as a base for the island to provide structural support, especially considering the weight the countertop would bear. For the waterfall edge, instead of pouring concrete vertically, which would have been logistically challenging, McGeehan cleverly used Ardex Feather Floor Finish. This clay-like material allowed her to coat the side of the island, creating the appearance of concrete without the complexities of a true concrete pour, demonstrating a pragmatic approach to DIY. The aesthetic of the countertops was also carefully considered. To achieve a lighter, airier feel, Cristy and Colan tinted their concrete mixture with a mineral powder, aiming for a sandy white shade rather than a typical gray. This customization highlights the versatility of concrete as a material and its ability to be adapted to specific design visions. Rather than striving for absolute perfection, Cristy embraced the handmade quality of the countertops, finishing the perimeter and appliance edges with a hand trough and sander. This technique enhanced the visual interest, giving the surface the nuanced texture of natural stone, which complemented the centuries-old character of their home. Durability, a primary concern, was addressed through the selection of a high-quality sealant. McGeehan emphasized the importance of investing in the best professional-grade epoxy, acknowledging that while the application was time-consuming, it was crucial for protecting the porous concrete. This sealant effectively prevented the countertops from damage, disproving her initial worries about their longevity. An oversized John Boos butcher block cutting board was also incorporated as an additional protective measure, allowing for worry-free food preparation. The project showcases how careful planning, clever hacks, and attention to detail can result in a sophisticated and functional DIY kitchen renovation. #DIYHomeImprovement #ConcreteCountertops #KitchenRenovation #HomeDesign #HudsonValleyDesign #InteriorDesign #CreativeSolutions #CristyLeeMcGeehan #DIYHomeImprovement #ConcreteCountertops #KitchenRenovation #HomeDesign #HudsonValleyDesign #InteriorDesign #CreativeSolutions #CristyLeeMcGeehan
