Home with Tess: How I learned to stop worrying about wainscoting and love an easier solution

The author, Theresa Bennett, shares her interior design experiences, particularly her struggles and learning curves with DIY wall decor projects like wainscoting and wall paneling. She notes that her Instagram and Pinterest feeds are filled with inspiring homes and talented DIYers, which, while providing inspiration, also sometimes create self-doubt, especially concerning the ease with which others seem to tackle elaborate wall paneling and wainscoting projects. These decorative wall elements are currently trending, appearing as half walls with woodwork at the bottom (wainscoting) or full accent walls (paneling). Bennett observes that many DIYers showcased online are women who, frustrated with waiting for others, undertook these projects themselves, often achieving professional-looking results with perfectly spaced woodwork and paint finishes. This creates a perception that these projects are straightforward. She contrasts this perception with her own experience attempting a seemingly simpler project: installing a chair rail in her attic to add visual interest. She believed that if others could manage intricate patterns, a straight line of wood would be manageable. However, she found it to be surprisingly difficult. Her first major challenge was precision in measurement. Despite measuring each wall multiple times, one piece of wood ended up an inch too short. She also encountered a steep learning curve using a miter box and hand saw, the manual alternative to an electric compound miter saw, leading to moments of frustration. The most significant difficulty, however, was ensuring the chair rail was perfectly straight. Instead of drawing a guide on the wall beforehand, she used the top of existing built-in drawers as a reference and attempted to level pieces as she went. This method resulted in a significant height difference of 4 to 6 inches across the room, which she fortunately managed to conceal with a bookshelf in a corner. These struggles led her to realize that the seemingly effortless DIY projects depicted on social media often do not show the mistakes and learning processes involved. She concludes that social media presentations are not always an accurate reflection of reality, a lesson she continues to learn despite growing up online. Currently, Bennett is working on her baby's nursery and plans to install another chair rail, aiming to apply the lessons learned from her previous attempt. She views a chair rail as an ideal starting point for those interested in wainscoting or paneling, as it offers an interesting yet simple architectural detail to a room. She acknowledges that wall woodwork would likely become easier with practice and dedicated time for perfection. However, she emphasizes that it is not the quick and easy project it often appears to be online. Furthermore, while paneling is a timeless feature, Bennett expresses concern that the current modular style might just be a fleeting trend. She questions whether she would want to undertake the effort of removing countless pieces of wood from her walls in a decade. Consequently, she intends to stick with chair rails for her future projects, finding them a more practical and less daunting option. #HomeImprovement #DIYProjects #InteriorDesign #WallDecor #Wainscoting #ChairRail #SocialMediaReality #HomeWithTess #Woodwork #HomeImprovement #DIYProjects #InteriorDesign #WallDecor #Wainscoting #ChairRail #SocialMediaReality #HomeWithTess #Woodwork
