Console Sinks Are Making a Comeback—Here's How to Style the Bathroom Fixture

While traditional bathroom vanities and vessel sinks have been popular, console sinks, a fixture known for its understated elegance, are experiencing a resurgence in popularity among designers and homeowners. Originally considered basic, these sinks are now appreciated for their minimalist and low-frills appeal, offering opportunities for personalization in modern designs. Alissa Ruesch, styling space product manager for Kohler, notes their increasing trendiness, particularly for powder rooms due to their compact footprint and limited storage, which makes them ideal for smaller spaces where extensive storage isn't a primary concern. The article highlights that console sinks have a history dating back to the 1920s, gaining widespread use in bathrooms by the mid-century. These wall-mounted fixtures typically feature a countertop integrated with a built-in basin, supported by two or four legs. A key characteristic is the open space beneath the sink, which exposes the plumbing, contributing to its functional yet subtle aesthetic. While vintage reproductions are popular, modern console sinks are available in diverse styles, materials, and price points, ranging from classic porcelain to marble-topped versions, fitting various design preferences and budgets. Designer Lauren Nelson emphasizes their suitability for smaller bathrooms, such as powder rooms, where they offer a lightweight and decorative alternative to bulkier vanities, enhancing the room's aesthetic without overwhelming the space. Casey Keasler, another designer, points out the visual benefits of console sinks in small areas, as their lack of integrated storage can create an illusion of greater space. This makes them particularly well-suited for powder baths or less frequently used bathrooms. Keasler also notes that console sinks add a sculptural element, making them more visually engaging than standard cabinets and capable of elevating a room's overall design. The open space beneath also allows for the incorporation of patterns on walls, such as lime wash, plaster, or wallpaper, which can surprisingly make small bathrooms feel larger when using medium to large-scale designs. Despite their aesthetic advantages, the primary drawback of console sinks is their limited storage capacity. However, for smaller bathrooms, this is often not a significant issue. Creative storage solutions include draping towels over the console legs, utilizing floating shelves above the sink for items like soaps and candles, or placing decorative baskets underneath for additional storage. Ruesch suggests using baskets that are appropriately scaled to avoid disproportionate appearances or interfering with exposed plumbing. For those preferring concealed storage, curtains can be added to the sink's legs, or adjacent built-in cabinets and medicine cabinets can be incorporated. Designers also recommend utilizing other wall spaces, such as above the toilet, for additional storage. When styling console sinks, the focus is on minimal accessories to add warmth and texture. Nelson suggests a small tray for soap and a bud vase for flowers. Keasler advises choosing high-quality, luxurious items, such as hand towels, to make a statement. For organizational elements, decorative baskets can provide storage without clutter, with round baskets suitable for rolled towels and square/rectangle baskets for folded ones. Baskets with lids are useful for concealing larger items like tissue paper or personal appliances, preventing a cluttered appearance. Overall, console sinks offer a blend of historical charm and modern versatility, making them a stylish and practical choice for specific bathroom applications, especially when complemented with thoughtful storage and decor. #ConsoleSinks #BathroomDesign #HomeDecor #MinimalistBathroom #SmallSpaceDesign #InteriorDesignTrends #BathroomFixtures #PowderRoom #HomeImprovement #ConsoleSinks #BathroomDesign #HomeDecor #MinimalistBathroom #SmallSpaceDesign #InteriorDesignTrends #BathroomFixtures #PowderRoom #HomeImprovement
