Tom Dixon and Prolicht launch Code track lighting at VDF
British design brand Tom Dixon and Austrian manufacturer Prolicht have unveiled their new 'Code' collection of LED track lights at the Virtual Design Festival (VDF). This collaboration introduces a unique approach to lighting design by celebrating, rather than concealing, the electronic circuits and components that are typically hidden within conventional track lighting systems. The 'Code' collection features bare LEDs mounted on printed circuit boards (PCBs), allowing for various configurations to create visually striking and graphic lighting sculptures.
The genesis of this partnership began with a shared vision between Tom Dixon and Prolicht's founder, Walter Norz, to innovate within the track lighting sector. Their discussions, which started in Innsbruck, focused on developing a minimal track system that would strip away unnecessary embellishments and highlight the intrinsic beauty of the light engine itself. Tom Dixon expressed his curiosity regarding the prevalent industry practice of concealing these intricate and ubiquitous circuit boards, questioning how to showcase their simple yet complex aesthetics.
The 'Code' collection offers designers and architects a versatile kit of parts, enabling infinite possibilities for creating customized lighting solutions. The LED light sources are available in three distinct shapes: Dot, Dash, and Grid. These can be combined to form various light structures, including blocks, spheres, strips, or columns of light. This modularity allows for a high degree of creative freedom in tailoring lighting arrangements to specific spaces and design intentions.
The collaboration between Tom Dixon and Prolicht was characterized by a mutual reliance on each other's strengths. Prolicht contributed its extensive expertise in light engineering, while Tom Dixon provided the overarching design vision. This synergistic approach resulted in a collection that is both technically sophisticated and aesthetically decorative. Walter Norz, CEO of Prolicht, highlighted the swift and effective connection with Tom Dixon and his team, emphasizing that 'Code' exemplifies their collaborative spirit, producing something that neither party could have achieved independently. The collection is a testament to the successful merger of diverse backgrounds and complementary skills, culminating in a product that redefines the aesthetics of functional lighting.
