This Stunning Garden with Zen Vibes Uses Shockingly Little Water

The article presents a detailed look at a low-water Zen garden designed by Sunset garden editors Johanna Silver and Lauren Dunec Hoang, in collaboration with landscape designer Josh Heiser. This tranquil garden was created as an installation for Sunset’s 2015 Celebration Weekend, demonstrating how a yard can incorporate outdoor living elements while minimizing water consumption, particularly relevant in times of drought. The garden was built around a remodeled backyard cottage, a versatile structure that homeowners can use as guest houses or rental units, offering both additional income and housing relief. The design emphasizes order and tranquility, featuring three distinct areas: a lounge, a small dining area, and a "looking garden" composed of mass-planted beds. These areas are unified by a consistent palette of green and silver foliage, contributing to the garden's serene atmosphere. The article provides practical tips and design strategies to achieve a similar aesthetic and water efficiency. Key design elements include enclosing the outdoor dining area with planter beds to create a sense of intimacy. A long bench with cushions and pillows offers a relaxed space for gathering or napping, shaded by Chinese pistache trees. The "looking garden" utilizes mass planting for a graphic effect, featuring low-water, low-maintenance plants like shaggy Acacia cognata ‘Cousin Itt’ and variegated Agave attenuata ‘Ray of Light’ in custom steel containers. Airplants (Tillandsia) are incorporated into tablescapes and outdoor shelves for a striking visual impact with minimal care, requiring only weekly overnight submersion in water. Texture is introduced through a mix of plants such as feathery Acacia cognata ‘Cousin Itt,’ silvery pearl bluebush (Maireana sedifolia), and Pittosporum tenuifolium ‘Wrinkled Blue.’ Circular forms, including fiber-concrete containers, boxwood plants, and mortar-covered ceramic globes, create visual consistency. Larger succulents, specifically Agave attenuata and Agave potatorum ‘Kissho Kan,’ are strategically placed as focal points within the planting beds and in elevated planters. Mulching with Mexican river rocks laid on their side not only provides a graphic top-dressing but also reduces evaporation by allowing water percolation while covering exposed soil. Even traditional low-water plants like Festuca glauca ‘Elijah Blue’ are used in graphic clumps to achieve a modern, tranquil look, especially when backlit in the evening. The garden also incorporates natural elements like boulders surrounded by plants to simulate outcrops, enhanced with modern touches like concrete-dipped ceramic globes. Boundaries are defined by a 12-foot-long slate wall, enclosing the lounge space and complementing the stone beds and fencing. Curved 20-foot-long cedar board fences add visual interest and create discreet storage nooks. Permeable paving, made from 12-foot-square pavers set amidst quartz gravel, allows water to penetrate the ground, showcasing an innovative approach to hardscaping. Container gardening is reimagined with low-water plants like Pittosporum tobira ‘Shima’ and Acacia cognata ‘Cousin Itt’ in round pots, alongside airplants and cement-covered globes, reducing maintenance requirements. DIY shelving units, constructed from recycled fruit crates and galvanized piping, display garden elements like bonsai specimens, moss-wrapped ferns, and potted succulents. Modern outdoor furniture, such as the Farmhouse Lounge Chair from Bend Goods and a Pebble Coffee Table from West Elm, provides comfort and style. Planter beds are created using stacked stone, like Chief Cliff dry stack, to provide organic-looking containers that allow ample space for root growth. Finally, the outdoor dining area features casual seating with Dan Wood Stools around a Hive Cement Dining Table, using mixed materials and muted colors to maintain an informal yet sophisticated aesthetic. #ZenGardenDesign #LowWaterLandscaping #DroughtTolerantPlants #OutdoorLivingSpaces #GardenDesignTips #ModernGardening #SustainableLandscaping #ContainerGardening #DIYGardenProjects #ZenGardenDesign #LowWaterLandscaping #DroughtTolerantPlants #OutdoorLivingSpaces #GardenDesignTips #ModernGardening #SustainableLandscaping #ContainerGardening #DIYGardenProjects
