This L.A. Garage-Turned-Garden Room Is Full of Great Outdoor Living Ideas
Meghan Rostovsky, an interior designer and partner at Providence Design Group in Los Angeles, transformed her own garage into a stylish outdoor living space to address two common challenges: maximizing a small-footprint home for a growing family and integrating outdoor living. This project served as one of the first collaborations for the Providence Design Group, founded by Rostovsky and her partners Catherine Sidon and Meredy Vranich, who aimed to provide boutique design experiences for clients with varying budgets. The team, mentored by interiors legend Suzanne Rheinstein, worked closely on Rostovsky's garage conversion, involving architect Shawna Poliquin, to create a versatile backyard oasis.
The renovated garage, now a garden room, features folding French doors, large paned windows, a wet bar, and a small powder room, making it suitable for both adult entertaining and children's activities. The design emphasizes a refined yet accessible style, blending traditional elements with a liveable aesthetic. The space includes a patio large enough for a 10-person dining table and a sitting area by a painted brick fireplace. The designers incorporated various geometric patterns, such as hexagonal terracotta floor tiles, rectangular window panes, and striped seat cushions, to achieve a balanced look.
The article also provides a shopping guide to help readers recreate a similar outdoor living room, adaptable for various settings from urban townhouses to lake houses. Key recommendations include a colorful and durable cocktail table made from recycled plastic, a timeless rattan sofa for elegant seating, and a natural fiber jute rug to warm up tile floors and withstand wear. For added comfort during cooler evenings, the guide suggests incorporating warm blankets, such as Kantha quilts. Decorative elements include coordinating pillows to introduce pattern and color, an oversized lantern to make a statement and highlight high ceilings, and an all-weather garden stool that serves as both functional sculpture and extra seating. Finally, the use of catch-all baskets is recommended for storage of blankets, towels, or toys, adding a handmade charm to the space.
