Sisters Team Up to Provide Home Organization to Others
Carolyn Hoffman and Emily Freund, sisters with a shared interest in home organization and design, established Two Sorting Sisters in March 2022, an upscale organizational business serving clients in Washington D.C., Maryland, and Virginia. The inspiration for their venture originated in 2021 when Emily assisted Carolyn in reorganizing her home. Carolyn faced challenges with initiating the process and detaching emotionally from possessions, while Emily provided guidance and practical organizational strategies. During this collaborative effort, they recognized their complementary strengths and the satisfaction derived from creating aesthetically pleasing and functional solutions.
Emily harbored aspirations in interior design, and Carolyn, with a business background, also possessed an entrepreneurial mindset. They identified a market opportunity and, with their children growing older and having more time, decided to launch their professional organizing service. Two Sorting Sisters focuses on delivering organized spaces with an integrated interior design sensibility, aiming for a sophisticated aesthetic reminiscent of celebrity homes. Their services encompass a range of areas, including interior designer offices, homeschooling zones, walk-in closets, pantries, mudrooms, and kitchens.
Within the business, Carolyn manages the business and marketing aspects, while Emily leads the operational and design-oriented tasks, such as measuring spaces and conceptualizing solutions that are both practical for families and visually appealing. They frequently encounter clients overwhelmed by excessive possessions, leading to disorganization that affects daily life and causes frustration. The sisters operate under the principle that every item should have a designated place, following a methodical process of purging, sorting, containing, and assigning a home to each belonging. This systematic approach ensures that clients' homes become functional and serene environments.
Clients have affectionately referred to them as “organizing fairies” due to their transformative work. The initial step in their process involves a free consultation to understand client needs. Upon engagement, they schedule subsequent visits to implement organizational strategies. They have observed that organizing one area often necessitates reconfiguring adjacent spaces, creating a domino effect. For instance, a client might initially request pantry organization, which could then lead to subsequent projects in the kitchen, bar area, or mudroom, and eventually extend to other parts of the house, like a basement.
Beyond the business aspect, Two Sorting Sisters has deepened the personal bond between Carolyn and Emily. Despite a five-year age difference that resulted in less closeness during their upbringing, shared experiences in raising their children and now collaborating on this business venture have strengthened their relationship, fostering numerous enjoyable and memorable moments.
