Repair Shop's WILL KIRK on his furniture hacks

Will Kirk, a 39-year-old antique-furniture restorer and a prominent figure on BBC's "The Repair Shop," shares insights into his craft, career, and practical furniture restoration hacks. Kirk's journey into woodworking was initially unplanned; after two failed attempts at a graphic design degree, he stumbled upon an antique-furniture restoration course at London Metropolitan University, where he discovered his passion despite being surrounded by much older students. His first significant project was restoring a Victorian writing slope, which now serves as a "donor" piece, providing parts for other restorations—a practice he defends pragmatically given his lack of personal use for such an item. Kirk's career took a significant turn in 2016 when a client working in television saw his potential for the camera, leading to his role in the pilot episode of "The Repair Shop." The show, now in its 14th season, draws millions of viewers and has elevated Kirk to a public figure, ambassador for the Heritage Crafts Association, and an author. His recently published book, "Restore," serves as a manual filled with advice on furniture care and restoration. His book offers both conventional and unconventional tips. He cautions against chemical-based cleaning products, advocating for gentler alternatives. Among his more surprising recommendations are using cold black tea to stain faded wood, utilizing a shelled walnut to reduce the appearance of scratches due to its oil content, and applying mayonnaise to remove watermarks, as the oil can displace the water. The effectiveness of some of these methods is personally attested to by the interviewer, who successfully removed a water stain using Kirk's iron-and-towel technique. Despite his professional dedication to antiques, Kirk's personal home in Surrey, shared with his wife Polly and young daughter, reflects a more modern "Scandi or mid-century" aesthetic, a preference of his wife. He refrains from extensive restoration work at home, considering it a "busman's holiday." However, he plans to build a garden workshop and has personally crafted shelves and wardrobes for his home. He also engages in smaller, personal projects, such as carving a wooden elephant for his daughter's second birthday, acknowledging that she will likely be more impressed by a Peppa Pig toy. Kirk is driven by a desire to impress his 89-year-old grandfather, a furniture restorer himself, with whom he now regularly discusses projects. He recalls a particularly satisfying moment when his grandfather expressed pride in his restoration of a Dutch cabinet, which had its vibrant colors revealed after extensive cleaning and French polishing. Kirk emphasizes that his work is not about ego but about preserving historical objects, stating, "I do it for the love of it." #WillKirk #TheRepairShop #FurnitureRestoration #Woodworking #AntiqueRestoration #DIYHome #Craftsmanship #HeritageCrafts #HomeDecorHacks #WillKirk #TheRepairShop #FurnitureRestoration #Woodworking #AntiqueRestoration #DIYHome #Craftsmanship #HeritageCrafts #HomeDecorHacks
