Dutch designer Paul Coenen has developed an innovative technique to create wrinkled patterns on anodised aluminium surfaces for his latest furniture and lighting collection. Presented during Dutch Design Week, the collection includes a coffee table, a lamp from his Section furniture line, and a stool, all featuring a distinctive "shrink-wrap" aesthetic. Coenen's inspiration for this project stemmed from observing a gradient sample produced by BWB Surface Technology, a specialist in technical coatings, which sparked his interest in exploring patterned aluminium surfaces. The collaboration with BWB Surface Technology was crucial to the development of this technique. Coenen worked closely with the company to understand the anodisation process, which involves submerging metal in an electrified electrolytic solution to create a durable, corrosion-resistant oxide layer. Instead of simply applying a single colour, Coenen experimented with methods to introduce intricate patterns into this oxide layer. His approach involved removing the aluminium panels from the production line during the later stages of anodisation, allowing him to treat them by hand with organic dyes. During this manual treatment, liquid dyes were poured over the panels, and plastic sheets, similar to those used in food packaging, were then overlaid. This "shrink-wrapping" method creates creases in the plastic, which guide the flow of the dye. The dye settles more densely within these creases, resulting in a deeper, darker colour in those areas, while being pushed away from the flatter surfaces. This interaction between the dye and the naturally porous aluminium oxide layer embeds the pattern directly into the metal surface. After the panels were dyed and patterned, they were unwrapped, rinsed, and returned to the production line for the anodisation process to be completed. This method ensures that the pattern becomes an integral part of the metal, rather than just a surface application. The collection showcases pieces that underwent multiple colour treatments; for instance, the Column Light and Column Coffee Table received a yellow base layer followed by a deep purple-blue or violet finish. This layering also deliberately exposes glimpses of the raw aluminium, adding depth and complexity to the textured patterns. Coenen noted that the process, while guided, retains an element of unpredictability, as the precise mixing and shifting of hues depend on the duration the dyes are left on the surface. He highlighted that this unpredictability contributes to the unique character of each piece. This new direction marks a significant departure from Coenen's earlier work, which predominantly featured minimalist furniture made from simple stainless-steel forms. He observed that these new coloured pieces garnered considerably more attention at Dutch Design Week, suggesting a positive reception for his experimental approach to material and manufacturing. Coenen expressed enthusiasm for his collaboration with BWB, emphasizing that such partnerships, combining technical expertise with artistic curiosity, are fertile ground for innovation.
