Go bold on exterior design with new Hardie Oblique Cladding
James Hardie Australia introduces Hardie Oblique Cladding, a new exterior cladding system designed to bring a sophisticated and bold look to modern homes through bespoke groove combinations. This fibre cement shiplap board solution is engineered to transform Australian home exteriors by providing clean lines and geometric precision. Hardie Oblique Cladding, which is 14mm thick, features robust shiplap boards with deep, wide grooves, incorporating one angled edge and one square edge. The groove spacing, available in 175mm or 275mm, creates a dynamic interplay of highlights and shadows, adding depth to exterior walls.
When installed vertically, the cladding contributes to a modern minimalist aesthetic, offering a sleek, confident, and contemporary finish. The boards are available in lengths of 2750mm and 4200mm, which helps to minimize waste and provide a seamless finish, particularly for tall exterior walls and steeply pitched gables, allowing for striking architectural forms without interruption. The product also offers design flexibility with two board widths: 200mm and 300mm. This allows for various installation options, including repetitive patterns for simplicity or alternating and staggered combinations for a fresh, contemporary appeal. An example of this versatility is demonstrated in the 'Twin Peaks' building project, where a staggered width installation of 200mm and 300mm boards created a distinct visual effect on two gabled pavilions. This bespoke arrangement enhanced the facade's depth and character, providing generous proportions and a modern appearance, especially when combined with vintage bricks.
The unique visual effect of Hardie Oblique Cladding is attributed to the design of its grooves, where one side is angled and the other is vertical, generating an ever-shifting interplay of shadow and light. This feature, combined with the two width options, empowers architects to create varied patterns and rhythms. Nathan Punton of PXA Architects highlights the advantage of the 4.2-meter board length, which often eliminates the need for flashing joints, allowing for a premium, seamless finish on full gable ends and side elevations. The cladding is delivered pre-primed, enabling homeowners and designers to paint it any desired color, including darker shades, without concerns about warping or splitting. Constructed from Hardie premium fibre cement, it offers durability and resistance to termites, rot, and moisture, making it suitable for harsh coastal and other challenging environmental conditions. Furthermore, Hardie Oblique Cladding is non-combustible and meets Bushfire Attack Level (BAL) requirements up to BAL40. When integrated into the Hardie Smart Fire & Acoustic Wall System, it can achieve a Fire Resistance Level (FRL) of up to 60 minutes. CoreMark certification ensures compliance with the relevant requirements of the National Construction Code (NCC) when installed according to guidelines. This new cladding system is positioned as an ideal choice for both recladding existing homes and for new constructions or extensions, offering design flexibility and high performance for modern Australian homes.
