The project presented multiple hurdles, including a tight 45-day timeline from concept design to installation, and the need to work on an active hand-printed garment design workshop located in a residential area. Beyond logistical constraints, the team faced significant technical challenges involving new design processes for form-finding, design-engineering, and manufacturing a complex 3D structure. A key difficulty was the lack of local skilled labor experienced in pre-stressing cable nets, installing, or accurately measuring such intricate three-dimensional structures. This placed a substantial responsibility on engineer Vipul Mehta and Schafbock's Shehzad Irani to meticulously manage the system detailing, engineering support, and overall project execution. Their approach involved continuous monitoring to ensure accuracy, alongside developing new protocols, measurement methods, and specialized customized tools. These tools and tackles were innovated using readily available off-the-shelf resources, demonstrating ingenuity in overcoming resource limitations. Irani noted that once these systems were established, the project, while more tedious than conventional fabric structures of similar scale, became achievable. Schafbock Design Workshop, founded in 2002, specializes in designing and manufacturing various tensile structures, including car parks, gazebos, tensile roof canopies, portable warehouses, and tensioned facades. The successful completion of this portico shade structure marks a significant milestone for the company. Heather and Jim Stewart undertook a significant home renovation, just one month after their marriage, to transform an Edwardian property into a modern, open-plan living space. Their primary goal was to create an ideal entertaining area for their four grown-up children and to establish a strong indoor-outdoor connection. They specifically aimed to enhance their kitchen-diner, which initially suffered from poor lighting and a lack of connection to the garden due to the presence of a utility room, toilet, and an outhouse. The couple desired an open-plan layout to accommodate larger gatherings and introduce a contemporary feel to their home. The renovation involved extending the house by one meter beyond its original footprint, necessitating extensive groundwork. This included removing 200 tonnes of earth from the sloping rear garden and constructing a new retaining wall. The retaining wall was built using bricks from internal dividing walls that were removed, showcasing a resourceful approach to materials. The project faced challenges, such as the need for underpinning and specialist house insurance due to the complexity of the groundworks and the sloping garden. A single-track road at the top of the garden facilitated access for the removal of earth. Jim Stewart managed the construction, while Heather focused on the kitchen design. Heather's vision for the kitchen emphasized a clean, modern aesthetic. She selected high-gloss units and Maxtop Quartz work surfaces to reflect light, a crucial element given the kitchen's initial lack of natural illumination. The design prioritized drawers over traditional cupboards, eliminating much of the wall space to achieve a sleek, uncluttered look. Bespoke architectural oak beams were incorporated to highlight the sloping roof of the extension, adding visual interest and character to the open space. A bespoke extractor fan was also custom-made by Kelvent to complement the design. The outdoor space was meticulously redesigned to complement the new indoor layout. The garden, originally on a slope, was divided into three tiers – referred to as "lower, middle, and upper earth" by Heather – to maximize its usability and sun exposure. Anthracite Grey composite decking from UPM ProFi Deck and glass balustrading from CTM Fabrications were installed to create a seamless transition from the kitchen-diner. Sliding doors from Windowplus further strengthened the indoor-outdoor link, allowing easy access to the garden and flooding the interior with natural light. French doors with glass panels were also incorporated into the living area for additional light and garden access. Despite a slight delay due to material shortages, the couple expressed satisfaction with the builders' work. The newly designed kitchen offers views of the raised garden, and a green blind in the kitchen echoes the vibrant colors of the outdoor plants. The extended area now serves multiple functions, including cooking, eating, and relaxing, and is well-suited for parties and family gatherings. While Heather acknowledged that cooking in an open space requires a more relaxed approach to mess, she fully embraced open-plan living. The renovation created a cozy living area with a stove, providing a comfortable space for relaxation, though the beautiful front room now sees less use due to the allure of the new open-plan space. A historic carriage house situated at the end of a quiet mews alley in Brooklyn Heights underwent a significant renovation, building upon a sensitive rebuild from the 1990s. Initially, structural issues consumed a large portion of the budget during the early phases of a renovation for new owners. Following a period of living in the home, the owners re-engaged architects Rachael Stollar, Erin Fearins, and Ward Welch of Manhattan-based Studio SFW to address an extensive wish list and refine the interiors and exteriors. The primary goal was to complete items that had been deferred due to initial budget constraints, focusing on enhancing both functionality and aesthetic appeal. Key improvements in this latest phase included replacing a rectilinear staircase with a new graceful, sinuous design. The original staircase was described as "clunky and utilitarian," while the new oak structure, stained dark and custom-built off-site, introduces more openness and curves, creating a more pleasant and integrated feel within the home. Above this new staircase, a vintage Murano light fixture was installed, adding to the refined aesthetic. One of the most significant structural and aesthetic upgrades involved the replacement of a problematic octagonal skylight in the main living area. The previous skylight, constructed from triangular pieces of caulked glass, suffered from incessant leaking, sweating, and allowed harmful UV rays to fade furniture and books. The new skylight is a state-of-the-art unit, UV protected, thermally broken, and vented. While these technical specifications may not sound glamorous, the resulting improvement in light quality and thermal efficiency is described as spectacular, resolving long-standing issues and contributing significantly to the comfort and preservation of the interior. A top-down view of this new skylight is visible from the newly constructed roof deck, particularly from its pergola-covered lounge area. Beyond structural changes, Studio SFW carefully considered and integrated the home's outdoor areas, maximizing the utility and enjoyment of its limited 1,500 square feet of interior living space. These exterior enhancements include a landscaped pull-in parking area, a private garden at the rear of the ground floor accessible from the primary bedroom and home office, a brick-arched dining space off the second floor, and a new slate-paved roof deck. Brooklyn-based landscape architect Liz Pulver was responsible for the lush plantings, contributing to a cohesive indoor-outdoor experience. The new roof deck features slate pavers installed on a sleeper system, ensuring that nothing directly touches the roof and improving drainage and longevity. Interior updates focused on refining the existing decor and introducing new furnishings to create a more complete and considered aesthetic. Approximately half of the furnishings were replaced, including the living room sofa, nesting walnut and glazed clay coffee tables by Hinterland Design, and new art. Floor-to-ceiling drapes and a flatweave carpet found on 1stDibs were added. The design maintains a subtle 1970s vibe, characterized by a non-literal nod to the era and the incorporation of vintage lighting fixtures. The entry foyer also received an update with printed grasscloth from Pierre Frey, a custom console by Croft House, and new lighting, enhancing the first impression of the home.
