Designers are leaving these outdated kitchen trends in 2022 – some of their choices might shock you

As the year concludes, it's a fitting time to assess current home aesthetics and consider future renovation projects, especially for kitchen spaces. Kitchen renovations represent a significant investment, making longevity and timelessness crucial design considerations. While contemporary trends can inspire, the rapid evolution of styles means that a newly installed kitchen could quickly become dated. The key is to either adopt a timeless approach or to be sufficiently ahead of emerging trends to ensure lasting appeal. Kitchen trends typically evolve more slowly than other design elements, but distinguishing between a burgeoning trend and one nearing obsolescence can be challenging for the uninitiated. Designers were surveyed to identify kitchen trends they believe should be retired in 2022, providing insights into what is considered overplayed. One such trend is the use of basic field tiles. Designers suggest moving towards more dimensional or textured tiles to add depth to kitchens, rather than relying on plain and simple options that occupy significant visual space. This shift aims to introduce visual interest through texture rather than through more dramatic elements like cabinetry or countertops. Another trend identified for retirement is the prevalence of Carrara marble in white kitchens. While Carrara marble, with its soft grey veining, has long been a symbol of stylish modern kitchens and an easy way to introduce subtle pattern in neutral schemes, designers suggest its era as a dominant choice is waning. The consensus is that while marble kitchens will remain popular, the focus will shift to stones with more pronounced and interesting veining, moving away from the understated white varieties. The era of brightly colored kitchen cabinets, which emerged as a refreshing departure from traditional neutral spaces, is also seen as winding down. Designers observe a return to neutral color palettes for cabinetry, including whites, greys, and natural tones. However, this does not signify a return to blandness; instead, designers will incorporate interest through accent hardware against natural or dark cabinet fronts, rather than through bold cabinet colors. Dark kitchen appliances, previously favored for their minimalist and streamlined appearance that helped reduce visual clutter in kitchens, are considered a short-lived trend. The primary drawback cited is the high maintenance required to keep them clean, which conflicts with homeowners' desire for practical and easy-to-use spaces. Instead, classic stainless steel finishes are re-emerging, alongside a growing interest in appliances with visible accent hardware and retro aesthetics, such as Majestic stoves. The widespread use of Viola marble, despite being a favorite in 2022 for its dramatic appearance, is another trend designers believe has become overused. Its ubiquity has led to a perception of it being a 'copycat moment' in design. This highlights the risk of a material becoming a defining trend too quickly, potentially leading to its rapid decline in popularity. Designers are now seeking more unique materials, warm nickel and brass tones, and warmer wood tones, emphasizing classic, timeless elements to avoid fleeting trends. Finally, designers are advocating for the abandonment of 'faux' finishes and overused lighting schemes. This includes architectural elements like arches being incorporated where they don't genuinely fit the structure, or the use of effect-Quartz countertops. Additionally, the traditional trio of pendant lights above kitchen islands, while functional and budget-friendly, is being replaced by more minimalist or linear lighting solutions. These alternatives offer a subtle look, even light distribution, and a more modern aesthetic, encouraging homeowners to think beyond conventional lighting arrangements for their kitchen islands. #KitchenTrends #InteriorDesign #HomeRenovation #KitchenCabinetry #CountertopMaterials #KitchenAppliances #LightingDesign #MaterialTrends #KitchenTrends #InteriorDesign #HomeRenovation #KitchenCabinetry #CountertopMaterials #KitchenAppliances #LightingDesign #MaterialTrends
