Abandoned, mouldy, but couple saw the potential of rural Hong Kong flat

DanNi Zhao and Frédéric Rolli, former residents of Mid-Levels on Hong Kong Island, discovered an abandoned 700 sq ft flat with a rooftop of the same size in a village house in Mui Wo, Lantau Island. Despite the property's state, characterized by peeling plaster, floor-to-ceiling mould, and a lack of character, they perceived its potential due to its serene atmosphere, open views, and proximity to a river, which they associated with good feng shui. Zhao, originally from China and working in private banking, has lived in Hong Kong for about 12 years. Their decision to purchase the property was also influenced by their experience living in a traditional Chinese village for a year, which inspired them to integrate a similar aesthetic into their new home. Although they initially sought ideas from Studio Amal through 3D renderings, the couple, both creatively inclined and interested in interior design, chose to manage the renovation project themselves. They developed the design as work progressed, enlisting local workmen for the construction aspects. Prior to the renovation, they organized a graffiti party, inviting friends to paint on the walls, a portion of which, including their handprints, is now displayed in the dining area. Their design approach for the apartment aimed to blend traditional Chinese elements with contemporary comforts. They focused on creating a colorful and character-filled space that reflected their personal style without incurring excessive costs. The renovation involved transforming the dilapidated interior into a welcoming home that balances traditional Chinese design principles with soft furnishings, brushed brass accents, and modern art pieces. The couple's hands-on involvement in the design and execution allowed for a personalized touch, making the apartment uniquely theirs. They demonstrated that an original and inviting home can be achieved through careful planning and personal investment, even with a property that initially seemed beyond repair. The project served as a testament to their vision, transforming what many would consider undesirable into a vibrant living space that celebrates both cultural heritage and contemporary living. Their choice of location on Lantau Island, away from the urban bustle of Hong Kong Island, also reflects a lifestyle preference for tranquility and connection with nature, aligning with the good feng shui principles they valued. The integration of traditional Chinese design is not merely aesthetic but also functional, potentially incorporating elements like specific layouts, material choices, or decorative motifs that are characteristic of such design. The use of soft furnishings and contemporary art provides a modern contrast, preventing the space from feeling overly traditional or dated. The brushed brass elements likely add a touch of modern sophistication and warmth. This combination of old and new, traditional and contemporary, creates a dynamic and balanced interior. The overall project illustrates a successful transformation of a neglected property into a distinctive and comfortable home, showcasing how personal vision and hands-on effort can lead to a highly personalized and characterful living environment, proving that significant financial outlay is not always a prerequisite for creating an original and inviting space. #HomeRenovation #LantauIsland #ChineseDesign #InteriorDesign #DIYProject #MuiWo #CharacterHome #RuralLiving #ContemporaryArt #HomeRenovation #LantauIsland #ChineseDesign #InteriorDesign #DIYProject #MuiWo #CharacterHome #RuralLiving #ContemporaryArt
