Clever Kitchen Storage
Efficient kitchen design is crucial for maximizing functionality and space in a multi-purpose area that houses a vast array of equipment, appliances, cleaning products, food storage containers, and miscellaneous items. Challenges often arise in accessing desired items, such as a specific pot from a stack or a particular spice from a cluttered collection. To address these common kitchen dilemmas, several clever storage solutions can be implemented to optimize existing space.
One effective strategy involves utilizing kitchen corners, which frequently offer bare wall, cabinet, or refrigerator side space suitable for additional storage. For instance, a Manhattan kitchen demonstrates the utility of sturdy stainless steel bars for hanging pots and pans, keeping them readily accessible near the stovetop. Another example from blogger Jennifer Bridgeman showcases simple Ikea shelves mounted against a refrigerator housing. These shelves provide convenient storage for coffee makers, fruit, and baskets, thereby freeing up valuable counter space for items like flour and sugar canisters. Similarly, tucking a paper towel holder onto a wall keeps it within easy reach without occupying counter space or creating an eyesore.
Magnetic storage solutions offer another innovative approach to decluttering. Beth Weisberger, for example, created Gneiss Spice, a company that produces magnetic spice jars. These reusable glass jars can be arranged on any magnetic surface, including range hoods, refrigerators, or cabinet undersides, providing an organized and easily accessible spice collection. Beyond spices, magnetic strips are commonly employed by professional chefs for knife storage. This method prevents knives from dulling in drawers and ensures they are always within reach at the chopping station. Mike Allen's company, Elevation Rack, builds upon this concept by crafting magnetic knife holders and cutting boards, including a 'Chop Combo' that integrates a storage rack, magnetic knife holder, and a quick-release cutting board that can be folded for storage, further maximizing counter space.
The resurgence of pegboards, reminiscent of 1970s utility, highlights their practical value. Modular and versatile, pegboards can be mounted on any spare wall space and equipped with various hooks to hang a multitude of kitchen items. Julia Child famously used pegboards in her kitchen, and modern versions are available in diverse colors, offering both functionality and aesthetic appeal.
Finally, re-evaluating cupboard space involves intelligently displaying certain items while storing others. Inexpensive glass jars are a convenient and attractive option for storing dry pantry staples like flour, sugar, cookies, and oatmeal, especially for items frequently accessed. This method helps to organize and display visually appealing ingredients, freeing up cupboard space for less presentable but essential items like canned goods or peanut butter.
