At This New Delaware Hotel, the Restaurant Lamps Have the Exact Wattage for the Most Flattering Light

The Quoin, a new hotel and restaurant located in Wilmington, Delaware, offers a compelling design destination, positioned just a short distance from New York City. Housed within an 1885 Victorian-Romanesque brownstone, the property was designed by Philadelphia-based firms Method Co. and Stokes Architecture + Design. The hotel's name, 'Quoin,' is an old French architectural term for 'corner' or 'angle,' reflecting its historical context. The design approach for the Quoin focuses on authenticity and a seamless integration of diverse styles. The creative team, led by Daniel Olsovsky of Method Co., aimed to keep the interiors simple and straightforward while counterbalancing the Victorian architecture. This was achieved through a thoughtful combination of Shaker-influenced furniture, traditional floral-print wallpapers from Farrow & Ball and Little Greene, and contemporary pieces from Gubi and Lawson-Fenning. Randall Cook, cofounder and CEO of Method Co., further emphasized local craftsmanship, commissioning Joseph and Benjamin Johnson of Workerman Studios to create key focal points, such as a haberdashery-inspired cabinet in the lobby. A crucial element in establishing the hotel's ambiance is its lighting. Richard Stokes, founder of Stokes Architecture + Design, highlighted the importance of warm lighting (specifically 2,400k) to create an inviting environment that illuminates both the space and guests' faces effectively. The hotel boasts a cozy lobby, Wilmington's first rooftop bar, and an underground cocktail lounge named Simmer Down. The latter is a hidden space featuring a low barrel-vaulted ceiling and a whimsical mural by local artist Michael Alan, depicting Wilmington's history. The hotel's 24 guest rooms are uniquely designed, ensuring no two stays are identical. Beyond the hotel itself, the article provides a guide to dining and shopping in Wilmington. Recommended dining spots include De Co, a contemporary food hall in the Art Deco DuPont Building; Le Cavalier, which offers North African and Provençal flavors in the Hotel DuPont; Wilma’s, known for Southern-inspired dishes and duckpin bowling; and Bardea, a James Beard–nominated Italian restaurant. For shopping, suggestions include Trolley Square Market for homewares and local art; Girard Craft and Cork for specialty wines; and Delaware Estate Sale Warehouse for vintage decor and antique furniture. For those inspired by the Quoin's aesthetic, the article also suggests products to achieve a similar look, including Ringwold Wallpaper from Farrow & Ball, the Tung Side Table by &Tradition, the Miller Table Lamp, and the Moreno Sofa from Lawson-Fenning. The overall design narrative emphasizes a blend of historical charm with modern sensibilities, creating a distinctive and inviting experience for visitors. #HotelDesign #InteriorDesign #WilmingtonDelaware #ArchitecturalRenovation #BoutiqueHotel #LocalCraftsmanship #HospitalityDesign #DesignInspiration #TravelDestination #HotelDesign #InteriorDesign #WilmingtonDelaware #ArchitecturalRenovation #BoutiqueHotel #LocalCraftsmanship #HospitalityDesign #DesignInspiration #TravelDestination
