What's replacing the 'Unexpected Red Theory'? Here's what colors designers say will be popular in 2025

The 'Unexpected Red Theory,' a viral decorating hack coined by interior designer Taylor Simon on TikTok, involves placing a single pop of red in a space to instantly elevate it. This theory has gained significant traction among interior design enthusiasts. However, interior designers are now looking ahead to what colors might replace or evolve this trend in 2025, exploring hues that can create a similar sense of unexpected fun and sophistication. Experts suggest that the concept of introducing a surprising color pop can be applied to various shades beyond red, aiming to disrupt perfectly curated schemes in a playful and engaging manner. One emerging trend is the 'Unexpected Burgundy.' Interior designer Kathy Kuo suggests a subtle tweak to the original theory by adopting darker, richer red tones such as maroon, russet, black cherry, and burgundy. This approach allows for the continuation of an unexpected color pop while aligning with a key color trend for 2025. For instance, in a space decorated with light and airy neutrals, a pop of Bordeaux red can introduce a chic and fitting touch. Decorating with burgundy, despite its deep hue, can be made less daunting by pairing it with warm tones and pink-based neutrals like Farrow & Ball's Dimity or Sulking Room Pink. Examples include using burgundy paint on kitchen cabinetry or built-ins in a living room, or a velvet burgundy headboard in a bedroom, where soft pink tones can ground its intensity. Another significant color gaining popularity is 'Unexpected Yellow.' This trend moves away from vibrant sunshine shades towards more subtle butter-yellow hues, offering a warmer alternative to neutrals and beiges. Interior designer Bethany Adams notes that yellow, much like red, possesses a 'zing' that can be overwhelming in large quantities but becomes delightful and unexpected in small doses. She recommends incorporating sunny yellow through statement pieces like a large couch, or in smaller elements such as a pocket-sized powder room, pillows, accessories, or even fresh flowers. For those more committed, accent ceilings or yellow wood trims can significantly lift a space. The 'Unexpected Blue' is also becoming a prominent variation of this theory. Kristina Khersonsky, founder of STUDIO KEETA, frames the overarching concept as the 'unexpected any-color theory,' where any surprising color can provide the dramatic pull a space needs. She specifically highlights cobalt or Yves Klein blue as popular choices for unexpected blue accents. Khersonsky advises distributing these color splashes in a few places throughout a space, allowing the color to 'travel,' referencing the 'red thread theory.' While bold primary blues are effective, the trend also encompasses softer, paler blues. For example, an icy, cool-toned blue in a warm neutral entryway, such as a soft blue mudroom closet, can create a surprising yet harmonious visual impact. Ultimately, the essence of this evolving trend, regardless of the chosen color, is to introduce an element that feels slightly 'out-of-the-box.' This approach aims to make a space less contrived and more unique, fostering a sense of joy and individuality in home decor. #InteriorDesign #ColorTrends2025 #UnexpectedRedTheory #UnexpectedBurgundy #UnexpectedYellow #UnexpectedBlue #HomeDecor #DesignHacks #InteriorDecorating #InteriorDesign #ColorTrends2025 #UnexpectedRedTheory #UnexpectedBurgundy #UnexpectedYellow #UnexpectedBlue #HomeDecor #DesignHacks #InteriorDecorating
