We Ranked the 2025 Oscar Nominees for Production Design—See Our Top Pick
The 2025 Oscar nominations have been announced, prompting a review of the year's most inspiring and visually striking movie sets. Among an array of films featuring aspirational and thought-provoking visuals, the Academy selected five nominees for Achievement in Production Design: "The Brutalist," "Conclave," "Dune: Part Two," "Nosferatu," and "Wicked." This article ranks these five films based on their production design.
"Dune: Part Two" secured the fifth spot. Building on the success of its predecessor, which won an Oscar for production design in 2022, the sequel continued to impress with its futuristic and imposing sets. Production designer Patrice Vermette and set decorator Shane Vieau expanded the world of "Dune" by creating massive sets influenced by Brutalism, septic tanks, and a deliberate rejection of typical sci-fi aesthetics, resulting in a distinctive visual style.
"Nosferatu" claimed the fourth position. The horror film, set in the fictional town of Wisbog, largely used Prague’s Barrandov Studio to construct its interiors. Production designer Craig Lathrop and set decorator Beatrice Brentnerová led a team that built an impressive 60 sets, each meticulously detailed with elements like handwritten notes to transport viewers to the 1830s. The production also utilized Hunedoara Castle in Transylvania for exterior shots of Orlok’s Castle, contributing to the film's eerie atmosphere.
"The Brutalist" ranked third, showcasing the monumental and poetic aspects of Brutalist architecture. Production designer Judy Becker and set decorator Patricia Cuccia highlighted the post-war style, which favors minimalist structures with exposed concrete or brick, mirroring the immigrant experience. The towering Institute serves as a symbolic centerpiece, and other design elements, such as a large cabinet system for a lavish library, played significant roles in the film's visual narrative.
"Wicked" was placed second due to its vibrant and colorful production design. Production designer Nathan Crowley and set decorator Lee Sandales transformed an English countryside farm into Munchkinland, complete with a yellow brick road and millions of tulips. They also constructed Shiz University, including a massive water tank for scenes depicting students arriving by boat. The dorm shared by Glinda and Elphaba featured a domed painted ceiling with botanical motifs. Other notable elements included a multi-ton train and a mechanized bust, making the film a visual spectacle.
Finally, "Conclave" earned the top spot for its highly realistic and detailed recreation of the Vatican. The film focuses on the College of Cardinals electing a new pope. Since filming inside the Sistine Chapel is prohibited, production designer Suzie Davies and set decorator Cynthia Sleiter, along with local artisans, meticulously recreated the famous building. For private scenes, they used creative art direction and locations, including Europe's oldest hospital, to enhance the film's thriller aspect. The set, built in just ten weeks, impressed with its realism, making it the top pick for production design.
