The Best Projectors for 2025 | Reviews by Wirecutter

This article serves as a comprehensive guide to selecting the best projector for various needs, recognizing that different applications demand specific features and price points. The guide outlines key considerations before purchase, emphasizing the importance of intended use, room environment, and desired screen size, as these factors significantly influence the choice between a dedicated home theater projector and a portable mini projector. It highlights that specifications, especially claimed brightness, should be critically evaluated, and brighter projectors are generally necessary for larger screen sizes to maintain image quality. Furthermore, it advises users to select appropriate picture modes like Cinema, Movie, or Natural for optimal viewing experiences. The article provides specific recommendations across several categories. For a premium 4K home theater setup, the Epson Home Cinema LS11000 is recommended for its rich, accurate 4K laser projection, suitable for dedicated dark rooms. Its strengths include excellent detail, HDR video capability, accurate colors in Natural mode, a long-lasting laser light source eliminating bulb replacements, and high-bandwidth HDMI 2.1 inputs for advanced gaming consoles and future 8K sources. Its motorized lens offers ease of setup, though it lacks 3D video support. For living room environments, the Hisense C2 Ultra is suggested as an all-in-one 4K laser projector. While its dynamic contrast and color accuracy may not match the dedicated home theater pick, its high brightness and robust features, including a built-in streaming platform (Vidaa), a speaker system, AirPlay, Bluetooth, and 3D video support, make it ideal for casual, everyday use. It also boasts gaming-friendly features like low input lag and 1440p resolution at 120 Hz, despite having a bulky, swiveling stand and non-full-bandwidth HDMI 2.1 inputs. Budget-conscious consumers seeking a home theater projector under $1,500 have two primary recommendations. The BenQ HT2060 is praised for its bright, rich 1080p image with accurate colors and good contrast, making it suitable for dedicated home theaters. It is easy to set up and quiet but lacks built-in streaming, though this can be remedied with a media streamer. Its DLP technology may cause a “rainbow effect” for some viewers. The Hisense M2 Pro, a 4K laser projector, is presented as an excellent all-in-one option for casual living rooms, offering solid brightness, sharp 4K resolution, good contrast, and a wider color gamut for HDR video, along with a dynamic speaker system, Vidaa streaming, and gaming features. For portability, the Nebula Mars 3 Air is highlighted as the best portable mini projector, offering good brightness, contrast, and 1080p resolution, with HDR10 support. It features a built-in battery, Google TV, speakers, and automatic image adjustments. However, its tripod compatibility is limited, and it lacks a USB-C port. The BenQ X500i is recommended as the best short-throw projector for small spaces, capable of projecting a large 4K image from a short distance, and includes gaming-specific features. Lastly, the Nebula Mars 3 is chosen as the best outdoor projector due to its brightness, long battery life, IPX3 weatherproof rating, drop resistance, built-in LED lantern, and powerful sound system. The article also touches upon why ultra-short-throw projectors are not universally recommended as TV replacements for most users, suggesting traditional projectors or large TVs often offer better value or performance. To complete any projector setup, essential accessories like a projector screen and a mount are also discussed, with specific models recommended for both indoor and outdoor use.
