These 25 Dark Bedrooms Are Proof That Inky Hues Are the Definition of Elegance

Dark colors are increasingly being embraced in interior design, particularly for bedrooms, where they create a "cocooning effect" conducive to rest and relaxation. Danielle Fennoy of Revamp Interior Design emphasizes the natural healing properties of darker tones, noting their ability to promote melatonin production and repair circadian rhythms for deeper, more restful sleep. Bedrooms lacking abundant natural light or those that are relatively small are ideal candidates for dark color treatments, as rich hues can blur room edges and furniture, creating a sense of expansive space, as suggested by designer Adam Charlap Hyman. To prevent dark bedrooms from feeling closed-in or cave-like, designers recommend several guidelines. Keeping the ceiling white helps maintain a sense of openness. Furthermore, sticking to warmer hues is crucial, as cool-toned light fixtures are often avoided in bedrooms, and warm undertones help replicate a comforting nighttime ambiance. Styling techniques can also balance dark walls. HomeGoods style expert Ursula Carmona advises incorporating bright-colored decor and furniture to offset the dark backdrop, and using warm tone-on-tone colors for a cohesive and soothing atmosphere. Layering soft textiles such as faux fur rugs, throw blankets, and velvet pillows enhances comfort and luxury. Mood lighting, including luxe textures like marble or gold accents, can create a chic statement against dark walls, adding to the room's ambiance. Various dark color schemes and design approaches are showcased through examples from ELLE DECOR archives. These include a brown wall in a Hollywood estate featuring a custom mocha color with plaid rugs and caramel bedding, and cork walls providing warmth in a Miami Beach high-rise with a monochromatic scheme. Other examples include a San Francisco Edwardian primary bedroom with inky blue walls and a brown mohair headboard, and a 19th-century Australian house bedroom decorated with dark teals and muted gray bedding for a sophisticated and secure feel. Botanical wallpapers with desaturated hues are another option, as seen in a Long Island summer home using Sycomorus wallpaper and a grayish-blue print with a yellow daybed. Terra-cotta wall washes, such as Benjamin Moore’s Copper Kettle, can act as a cozy neutral. Black-on-black themes create a chic and cozy Brooklyn bedroom, especially in rooms with ample natural light. Traditional tapestries can counteract an uninviting feel, as demonstrated in a Hollywood Hills house with an antique textile and grassy blanket. Lacquered walls, like the brown ones in a New York home, provide a rich backdrop for diverse historical and textual elements. Aubergine hues, as in a Brooklyn residence using Farrow & Ball’s Brinjal, can mimic the night sky and encourage relaxation. Rouge rooms with buttery brown walls and luxurious textiles, and sultry red bedrooms with Valentino velvet and Spanish mirrors, offer sensuous and dramatic retreats. Additional examples highlight chic layers of rich hues and textures in a Hollywood Hills home, earthy tones in designs by Ben Johnston, textured guest rooms by Thom Filicia, and sophisticated black walls in a Washington, D.C., apartment softened by white bedding and French white oak floors. Floor-to-ceiling blue in a Chicago penthouse, black Holland & Sherry fabric walls in a 1920s Chicago master bedroom, deep gray Ralph Lauren Home wallpaper in a Greenwich Village apartment, and daring dark gray walls by Farrow & Ball in a Manhattan loft further illustrate the versatility of dark bedroom aesthetics. Glam blue walls in an upstate New York rancher, black quilted leather headboards, muted tones with Benjamin Moore’s Indian River, elegant black and gray combinations, and earthy browns and oranges in a Manhattan children’s bedroom all demonstrate the potential for dramatic and refined dark bedroom designs. #BedroomDesign #DarkColors #InteriorDecorating #HomeDecor #ColorSchemes #LuxuryBedrooms #ModernDesign #RestfulSleep #TextileLayering
