The IKEA Spice Rack Storage Hack That Keeps Kitchen Countertops Clutter-Free
Maintaining clutter-free kitchen countertops is an effective way to enhance a kitchen's aesthetic. While many items can be stored behind cabinet doors, spices are frequently needed and benefit from being easily accessible. A practical solution involves using floating spice racks for both convenience and visibility. Instead of purchasing specialized spice racks, an affordable DIY hack utilizes IKEA's MOSSLANDA picture ledges, which are priced at $6.99 each. These ledges offer a more modern and sleek alternative to IKEA's traditional BEKVAM spice rack, which has a basic pine design and is also priced at $6.99. The BEKVAM rack is versatile and can be repurposed for various storage needs, such as towel storage or general kitchen cabinet organization, but the MOSSLANDA ledge caters to a contemporary or minimalist aesthetic.
Implementing this hack involves acquiring one to three MOSSLANDA picture ledges, depending on the quantity of spices. To determine the exact number of ledges needed, one can measure 21 3/4 inches of painter's tape, representing the length of one ledge, and arrange spice bottles on it. This visualization helps in estimating the required number of ledges. The MOSSLANDA ledges are available in black, white, walnut, and a white-washed rustic pine finish, allowing for selection based on the kitchen's existing color scheme. It is important to note that the ledges do not include screws or anchors, so these must be obtained separately for installation, ideally near the stovetop for ease of access. For a more cohesive and organized appearance, transferring spices from their original packaging into identical, labeled jars is recommended, resulting in a streamlined spice rack for under $20.
Customizing this hack allows for further personalization. Painting the ledges to match existing cabinet colors can create a custom-designed look, seamlessly integrating them into the kitchen's decor. However, due to the ledges' fiberboard and paper foil construction, proper preparation is necessary before painting. The surface has a laminate feel, requiring sanding with 100-grit sandpaper to create a texture for paint adhesion. Care should be taken to scuff the surface without removing the original finish. After sanding, an all-purpose primer, such as Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3 primer (available at Home Depot for $30), should be applied. Once the primer dries, the chosen paint can be rolled on. Another customization option is to incorporate an additional ledge for decorative items like small paintings or potted plants. This allows for further aesthetic enhancement without contributing to countertop clutter, maintaining a clear and organized kitchen space.
