Aussie furniture designers create attractive & affordable kitchens
Three Melbourne-based furniture designers, Travis Dean, Charlie Wilde, and Peter Tragardh-Daly, identified a niche market for affordable, design-focused kitchens that bridge the gap between high-end, architecturally designed custom kitchens and mass-produced, modular options. Their company, Cantilever Interiors, was founded in 2006 to address this need, offering a unique product that combines bespoke quality with accessible pricing.
The designers developed a system of kitchen 'templates' known as the Kitchen Furniture System Series, which includes three distinct kitchen designs: K1, K2, and K3. This systematic approach allows for a higher level of detail and craftsmanship while benefiting from economies of scale in manufacturing. This method results in custom-look kitchens at a reduced price point and with shorter lead times, making designer kitchens more attainable for a broader audience. The design philosophy of Cantilever Interiors is heavily influenced by Australian modernist design from the 1950s and 1960s, emphasizing clean lines, meticulous craftsmanship, and matte finishes. They incorporate Australian timbers and a color palette inspired by the Australian landscape, aiming to create a uniquely Australian kitchen product.
Cantilever Interiors places a strong emphasis on durability and sustainability. Their streamlined manufacturing processes minimize waste, and the use of highly durable materials ensures a longer lifespan for their kitchens, projected to last 25 years or more. The entry-level K1 series, for instance, has a medium price of $25,000 and can be built and installed within 4-6 weeks. The designers approach kitchen design with the same rigor as furniture design, ensuring that each kitchen is durable, ergonomic, complements the home's style, and features resolved and aesthetically pleasing details. An example of their thoughtful design is the K1 series, which incorporates Hoop Pine ply open mitered boxes, allowing homeowners to personalize their space by displaying objects.
The neutral design of these kitchens is intended to be timeless and adaptable to various home styles. The open shelving feature provides an opportunity for personalization, allowing individuals to express their style through decorative items, similar to how statement cushions can transform a neutral couch. This approach offers a highly customized product at a fixed price, combining quality, aesthetic appeal, and practicality for homeowners seeking designer kitchens without the prohibitive costs associated with fully custom options.
