7 Tacky Bathroom Tile Patterns That Designers Are So Tired of Seeing

This article highlights seven bathroom tile patterns and styles that design professionals consider outdated or "tacky," advising homeowners to avoid them for a more modern and timeless aesthetic. The experts featured are Ellie Stein of Stein Studio Interior Design, Mary Gordon of InSite Builders & Remodeling, and Shannon Kadwell, kitchen and bath director at Anthony Wilder Design/Build. One of the first patterns to avoid is stone mosaic flooring in the shower. While reminiscent of a spa, designers find this look dated and practically difficult to clean, often appearing "a little off," especially when paired with tan wall tiles. Instead, simpler, more cohesive options are recommended for shower flooring. Wood-like porcelain tile flooring is another material that experts suggest steering clear of in bathrooms. The primary criticism is that it fails to convincingly mimic real wood due to visible grout lines and often feels cold to the touch. Designers recommend choosing either authentic wood or true tile, rather than a combination that attempts to imitate another material. Pastel-colored tiles, including shades like blush pink, mint green, and baby blue, are considered too reminiscent of the 1950s. Unless a complete mid-century restoration is intended, these colors can make a bathroom feel dated and often clash with modern hardware styles. Contemporary trends favor more neutral or sophisticated color palettes. Diagonal floor tile layouts are also identified as an outdated approach. Historically used to create an illusion of space in smaller bathrooms, this pattern now appears busy and dated. Modern design emphasizes clean lines and minimal grout, celebrating small spaces with elements like bold wallpaper rather than relying on optical illusions from diagonal tile patterns. Checkerboard tile flooring, particularly the high-contrast black-and-white variety, is deemed inappropriate for most bathrooms. While it might suit a historic setting, in a typical bathroom, especially a smaller one, it can feel overly theatrical and overwhelming, making the space appear busier and limiting other design choices. Simpler, less contrasting floor treatments are preferred. Decorative racing stripes, which were once popular accent tiles in showers or along walls, are now considered cheap and interruptive to visual flow. This style is associated with builder-grade updates from past decades. Designers suggest that continuous tile in a single tone or with subtle variations creates a more cohesive, timeless, and luxurious feel. Finally, traditional subway tile, despite its past popularity, is now seen as predictable and uninspired by many designers. While variations like larger tiles or matte finishes can update the look, many homeowners and designers are moving towards natural, sculptural, or large-format tiles to achieve a more contemporary and unique bathroom aesthetic. Overall, the emphasis is on simplicity, timelessness, and avoiding patterns and materials that have become synonymous with past trends. #BathroomTile #DatedDecor #InteriorDesign #HomeRenovation #DesignTrends #TilePatterns #ModernBathroom #BathroomTile #DatedDecor #InteriorDesign #HomeRenovation #DesignTrends #TilePatterns #ModernBathroom
