This Detail Automatically Makes a Traditional House Feel Moody

Interior designer Tess Twiehaus emphasizes a unique approach to home design by initiating projects with keyword brainstorming sessions with clients to understand their desired aesthetic and ambiance. While 'light' and 'airy' are common requests, Twiehaus encountered a client seeking a 'sexy' feel for their 1,500-square-foot Spanish-style home in Los Angeles. This specific desire led the design process towards incorporating black accents throughout the residence, such as zellige tile in the kitchen and a Nickey Kehoe pendant lamp in the dining room. A particularly impactful and unexpected application of this moody aesthetic was the integration of dark curtains. Twiehaus notes that luxurious hotel rooms often feature darker window treatments to create a specific atmosphere of escape and moodiness, a concept she aimed to replicate in her client's home. In the primary bedroom, a color-drenching technique was applied, using a forest green paint for the walls, window trim, and closet. This was complemented by curtains crafted from a James Malone fabric in a matching deep green, enhancing the room's cohesive and immersive feel. The bathroom adopted a blue theme, featuring navy café curtains that provided both privacy and a continuation of the rich color palette. For the guest bedroom, Twiehaus economically utilized the same midnight blue fabric, this time fashioning it into roman shades. These shades were chosen to harmonize with the romantic quality of the home’s original wood windows, contributing to the overall sophisticated atmosphere. Customization was a key aspect of the project, with Twiehaus investing in bespoke window treatments from Heritage Draperies. She highlights that the value lies in the tailoring and execution, opting for details like pinch pleats and a quarter-inch pooling of drapes on the floor, asserting that these specific elements significantly contribute to the final aesthetic. Despite the potential for dark fabrics to make small spaces feel confined, Twiehaus skillfully avoided this by selecting translucent linen for the curtains. This choice allowed ample light filtration, creating a distinctively atmospheric yet not oppressive 'light and airy' quality, demonstrating how dark window treatments can transform a traditional home into a moody and elegant sanctuary while maintaining a sense of openness. #InteriorDesign #HomeDecor #WindowTreatments #DarkCurtains #MoodyInteriors #SpanishStyleHome #CustomDrapery #TextileSelection #ColorDrenching #InteriorDesign #HomeDecor #WindowTreatments #DarkCurtains #MoodyInteriors #SpanishStyleHome #CustomDrapery #TextileSelection #ColorDrenching
