Frigidaire’s French-door with flex drawer is a well-rounded fridge
The Frigidaire Gallery GRMC2273CF French-door refrigerator stands out as a highly effective and feature-rich appliance, particularly for those seeking a counter-depth model. Released in 2021, this French-door refrigerator measures 70.19" x 35.9" x 29.5" (H x W x D) and is available in black stainless steel and stainless steel finishes. It is Energy Star rated and boasts a measured capacity of 11.6 cubic feet for the refrigerator and 3.6 cubic feet for the freezer, which is notably generous for its counter-depth design, allowing it to sit flush with cabinetry while still offering substantial storage.
One of the most impressive aspects of the GRMC2273CF is its temperature consistency. The refrigerator employs Frigidaire's Open Access Door design, where the right door is larger than the left. This design minimizes the loss of cold air by allowing access to most of the fridge by opening only one door. Internally, the refrigerator utilizes a TwinTech Cooling System with multiple air vents strategically placed throughout the interior, ensuring even temperature distribution. This system prevents the typical temperature variations seen in fridges with a single top vent, where the middle shelf might be warmer. Testing revealed that temperatures in the top and bottom of the fridge consistently hovered around 38°F, while the middle remained close to 36°F, with fluctuations of less than one degree. The freezer also exhibited excellent temperature stability, staying within a fraction of a degree of its average, which is crucial for preventing freezer burn. The Custom-Flex Temp Drawer also maintained its target temperatures within 1°F, demonstrating overall superior temperature control.
Beyond temperature performance, the GRMC2273CF offers remarkable storage versatility. Despite its counter-depth footprint, it provides an above-average 11.64 cubic feet of refrigerator storage, surpassing many standard-depth French-door models. This is achieved despite incorporating multiple drawers, which typically reduce space efficiency due to insulation requirements. The freezer offers a respectable 3.6 cubic feet. A key feature is the Custom-Flex Temp Drawer, a separate middle compartment with five preset temperature options: freezer, meat/seafood, cold drinks, deli/snacks, and chilled wine. This adaptability allows the drawer to serve various storage needs, from additional frozen goods to a wine cooler.
The refrigerator's crispers are another highlight, designed to preserve produce freshness effectively. They feature a built-in filter for ethylene gas, a plant hormone that accelerates ripening and spoilage, and maintain approximately four times more humidity than crispers in other fridges. This combination significantly extends the shelf life of fruits and vegetables, contributing to reduced food waste. The SpaceWise Organization System further enhances usability, featuring sliding door bins and folding shelves that can be adjusted to accommodate oddly-sized items. A dedicated 'Snack Zone' provides easily accessible storage for children.
However, the GRMC2273CF does have minor drawbacks. Some fixtures, like the freezer door and shelves, do not glide as smoothly as other components, occasionally hitching or squeaking. Repositioning shelves can be cumbersome, with one shelf tilting when an adjacent one is moved. The control panel is also noted to be somewhat unresponsive at times. The warranty is an industry-standard one year for parts and labor, which is shorter than offerings from competitors like LG and Samsung, whose warranties extend up to 10 or even 20 years on certain compressor parts. Frigidaire offers extended warranty purchases, but their effectiveness is a common point of concern in customer service feedback.
In terms of environmental impact, the GRMC2273CF is energy-efficient, consuming 668 kWh annually, and uses R-600a, a low global-warming-potential (GWP) hydrocarbon refrigerant. Frigidaire's parent company, Electrolux, aims to use 35% recycled steel and plastic in its products by 2030. Overall, the Frigidaire Gallery GRMC2273CF is a strong contender in the counter-depth French-door refrigerator market, lauded for its steady temperatures, flexible storage, and effective produce preservation, making it a highly recommended option despite minor ergonomic issues and a standard warranty.
