Solar-powered tiny home on wheels is made from reclaimed wood
Humble Hand Craft, based in Ojai, has developed the Shark Arch, also known as Los Padres, a sustainable tiny home constructed primarily from reclaimed wood. This off-grid, solar-powered dwelling on wheels embodies a rustic cabin aesthetic. Measuring 28 feet in length, it is considered substantial for a tiny home on wheels. To accommodate its size while maintaining mobility, the house is placed on a gooseneck trailer, allowing approximately 8 feet of the structure to extend over a truck bed. The design also incorporates aerodynamic features, such as a V-nose front end to reduce wind resistance and a “shark fin” roof for enhanced stability during transport. A collapsible wooden deck serves as an entryway and can be stowed when the home is in motion.
The interior design of the Shark Arch adheres to the principles of sustainability and eco-friendliness, predominantly utilizing reclaimed materials. The builders emphasize their commitment to conscious construction and business practices, aiming to minimize their carbon footprint by salvaging materials and harnessing solar energy to create high-quality artisan homes. The exterior features western red cedar cladding and trim, treated with an eco-friendly hemp shield. Upon entering through double redwood doors with dual pane glass, visitors encounter an all-wood interior, creating a cabin-like atmosphere. The walls are clad with reclaimed redwood sourced from old water tank staves, and the untreated western cedar boards on the ceiling emit a natural woody aroma, connecting the interior with nature.
The compact living area includes a living room and an adjoining kitchen, equipped with electric appliances powered by the home's solar energy system. The bathroom is notably spacious for a tiny home, featuring a repurposed copper tub and a composting toilet. Storage solutions are integrated throughout the living space, including under the sofa and behind the stairs, optimizing the functional use of the small footprint. A generously sized and well-lit sleeping loft is situated beneath the “shark fin” roof, benefitting from a large skylight. Additionally, another loft above the kitchen provides versatile space that can be used as an office, a guest room, or for additional storage. The Shark Arch represents a thoughtful approach to tiny home construction, combining sustainable practices with a cozy, handcrafted aesthetic.
