We’re Hooked on This Clever Room Divider Idea
Laurence Leenaert, the founder of the brand LRNCE, encountered a common challenge in her new studio in Marrakech: a lack of sufficient wall space to display her handcrafted textiles. Her studio, located in the Sidi Ghanem neighborhood, is unusually large and features numerous windows, a rarity in Moroccan architecture which often limits natural light. Despite the aesthetic appeal of the space, the absence of ample display surfaces for her blankets and rugs posed a practical problem for her business, which relies on showcasing these items.
Leenaert's innovative solution involved installing metal hooks around the perimeter of the ceiling and also centrally within the workspace. These custom-made, black-painted round hooks support wood poles, over which she drapes her woven items. Additionally, macramé planters are hung at varying heights from these poles, further enhancing the display and adding a touch of natural greenery. This method not only effectively addresses the display challenge but also contributes to the studio's aesthetic by creating a warm and inviting atmosphere through the abundant use of textiles.
Beyond its utility for showcasing products, this setup offers significant flexibility for an artist like Leenaert, who frequently transitions between designing clothing collections and painting ceramics. The movable nature of the display allows her to easily rearrange her work and photograph pieces for her website, optimizing her workflow. For individuals living in open-plan residential spaces, this approach serves as a creative and practical alternative to traditional room dividers. By suspending items from the ceiling, the floor space remains clear, which helps to create an illusion of greater roominess. This method also presents an opportunity to personalize a space by displaying favored fabrics or plants in an unconventional manner.
Leenaert's design choice highlights the versatility and adaptability of using overhead structures for decorative and functional purposes. Her solution is not only visually appealing but also a highly efficient use of vertical space, a concept that can be replicated in various settings to address similar display or spatial division needs. The ease of implementing such a system makes it an attractive DIY project for those seeking to enhance their living or working environments with a unique and functional design element.
