We Tested 16 Newfangled Robot Vacuum-Mop Combos. Don’t Buy One. | Reviews by Wirecutter
This article details a six-month investigation into 16 different robot vacuum-mop combos from various manufacturers, including Roborock, iRobot, Narwal, Ecovacs, and Eufy, to evaluate their efficacy and recommendability. The testing process began with nine models in a multi-pet, multi-story home, observing their performance on diverse floor types and their interaction with a busy household. Five models were quickly dismissed due to malfunctions or poor cleaning. The remaining 11 models underwent controlled tests in a 400-square-foot facility, simulating a living room environment with low- and medium-pile rugs and vinyl flooring. Testers assessed navigation around furniture, obstacles, and simulated pet waste. Vacuuming power was measured using a protocol similar to that for standalone robot vacuums.
Mopping capabilities were rigorously tested against dried stains such as coffee, milk, and caramel syrup, using warm water and, when available, manufacturers' cleaning solutions. Deep-cleaning and scrubbing modes were also utilized. The convenience of self-emptying/self-cleaning docks was evaluated, along with the ease of setup, mapping accuracy, intuitiveness of no-go zones, and cleaning features of the associated mobile applications. Customer service departments were contacted to gauge their responsiveness and problem-solving abilities. A group of paid testers also provided feedback on their experiences.
The findings consistently showed that current robot vacuum-mop combos fail to deliver on their promise of comprehensive cleaning. Most models either performed adequately at vacuuming or mopping, but rarely both simultaneously. For instance, the Dreame X30 Ultra excelled at vacuuming but was poor at mopping for its price, while Roborock Qrevo and Qrevo MaxV mopped reasonably well but had subpar vacuuming performance. A significant issue was the inability of most robots to avoid wetting carpet edges and corners, despite claims of mop-raising technology. Furthermore, brush-roll entanglement with long hair was a widespread problem, with only one model successfully avoiding it.
The robots struggled significantly with dried stains, often merely spreading them or leaving ghostly residues. Even high-end models, costing over $1,500, did not possess magical stain-erasing powers. Only a few models, like the Roborock Qrevo MaxV and Narwal Freo X Ultra, managed to fully remove dried coffee stains, often requiring multiple passes and extended cleaning times. The Narwal Freo X Ultra took 40 minutes to remove a milk stain, a task that could be accomplished manually in less than 30 seconds. Navigation was frequently inconsistent; robots got lost, confused, or entangled, and sometimes mopped inappropriate surfaces. While some sophisticated models could identify obstacles like fake pet waste, many others, including expensive ones, bumped into furniture or drove over cables.
Practical drawbacks include their large size, noise during self-emptying, and high maintenance requirements. Docks, weighing between 10 and 30 pounds, are bulky and not easily transportable between floors. The constant need to empty fetid mop water tanks and regularly clean the mop pad washing areas adds to the user's burden. Ongoing expenses for replacement bags, brushes, and filters further detract from their value. Despite these shortcomings, the mobile applications for these devices are generally well-designed, offering features like room mapping, no-go zones, and customizable cleaning schedules, although some apps had occasional glitches.
The market for these combo cleaners is rapidly expanding, with continuous product releases and minor updates. Experts suggest that fierce market competition leads companies to release imperfect models frequently. While the technology is still in its early stages, similar to how robot vacuums started, there is optimism for future improvements. Some companies are focusing on developing more intelligent robots capable of learning from mistakes. However, for the present, the recommendation is to defer purchasing a robot vacuum-mop combo and instead rely on separate, dedicated appliances for vacuuming and mopping.
