The 15 Best Vacuum Cleaners of 2026 | Reviews by Wirecutter

This comprehensive guide explores a range of vacuum cleaners, categorizing them by type and highlighting their suitability for various household needs, floor types, and specific user requirements. The guide acknowledges that the ideal vacuum cleaner depends on factors such as home size, flooring, presence of pets or children, physical strength, ergonomic preferences, and cleaning habits. It emphasizes that no single vacuum can fulfill all needs, offering a curated selection from powerful plug-in models to convenient cordless sticks, affordable handhelds, and advanced robotic cleaners. The upright vacuum section details the SEBO Felix Premium as a top pick, citing its powerful cleaning, adjustability, versatility, and durability, often lasting a decade or two. These plug-in models are noted for their strong suction, swappable brush heads for different surfaces, and effective filtration, making them suitable for allergy sufferers. They are recommended for deep cleaning, particularly for thick rugs, and for those willing to invest in a long-lasting appliance. However, their weight and cord dependency might be drawbacks. For a budget-friendly option, the Shark Navigator Lift-Away NV352 is presented as a reliable bagless upright, offering good performance on various floor types for a lower cost, though it may not be ideal for allergy sufferers or delicate flooring. Canister vacuums, such as the SEBO Airbelt K3 Premium and Miele Guard M1, are reviewed for their excellence on both bare floors and carpets, offering maneuverability and longevity. These models feature a separate canister for the motor and dustbin, providing a lighter steering experience and often including automatic cord rewind. They are highly versatile with various attachments and are recommended for those prioritizing extensive floor cleaning and durability, but may not appeal to users who prefer upright designs. Cordless stick vacuums, exemplified by the Dyson V12 Detect Slim, Shark PowerDetect Clean & Empty Cordless Vacuum, and Tineco GO Pet Cordless Vacuum, are praised for their convenience, agility, and suitability for smaller homes or quick clean-ups. While more expensive and having shorter lifespans than plug-in models, their ease of use often outweighs these drawbacks. Some models offer self-emptying stations, though performance on pet fur can vary. The Ryobi 18V One+ HP Advanced Stick Vacuum Kit provides robust suction for both home and garage use, albeit with increased weight. Robot vacuums, including the Roborock Q7 M5+ and Tapo RV30 Max Plus, are highlighted for their ability to maintain tidy floors with minimal effort, especially beneficial for homes with pets or children. These autonomous devices can map homes, schedule cleanings, and some even self-empty. While excellent for routine surface cleaning, they generally lack the deep-cleaning power of traditional vacuums, particularly on carpets, and can struggle with obstacles. The article also covers robot mop-vacuum combos, specifically the Narwal Freo Pro, as comprehensive cleaners for both vacuuming and mopping hard floors. These are useful for frequent wet and dry messes in homes with kids or pets, reducing daily floor care. However, they can be costly, require significant space for their docking stations, and still necessitate clearing obstacles. Handheld vacuums, like the Ryobi 18V One+ Performance Hand Vacuum Kit and Black+Decker 20V Max Dustbuster AdvancedClean+ Cordless Pet Hand Vacuum, are recommended for small messes and car cleaning, with specific models catering to pet hair removal. Finally, specialized recommendations are made for vacuums addressing allergies/asthma (bagged, sealed-system with HEPA/S-class filters), bare floors (models with switchable brush rolls or suction-only), and high-pile carpets (vacuums with adjustable cleaning heads).
