The Dedicate Lamp Cranes Above the Rest With Its Versatility
The article introduces the Dedicate Lamp system, designed by Thomas Bentzen for Muuto, highlighting its versatility and unique design philosophy. Traditional lighting often limits users to singular solutions, but the Dedicate Lamp challenges this convention by offering a comprehensive system that integrates primary, secondary, and ambient light sources. This approach aims to provide more dynamic and mood-conjuring illumination for various spaces.
Bentzen's design draws inspiration from two distinct sources: the classic architect's lamp, which influenced his education and work, and the industrial crane. The architect's lamp provided a foundational understanding of functional lighting, while the industrial crane offered a model for mechanical form and function on a grander scale. Bentzen describes an almost obsessive dedication to translating these industrial crane principles into the lamp's design, ensuring that its movement and operation intuitively convey the underlying forces at play.
The development of the Dedicate Lamp spanned five years, beginning in 2018. During this period, Bentzen explored numerous forms and iterations to achieve a versatile lighting solution. The result is not a single lamp but a system comprising three distinct models, each capable of being paired with one of four different bases: Table Clamp, Wall Mount, Table Pin, and Table Base. This modularity allows the lamp to adapt to diverse environments and functions, moving beyond the limitations of a typical desk lamp.
Bentzen emphasizes that the design is a "nod to its predecessor," aiming to elevate function in a contemporary context without losing sight of the original essence of task lighting. The lamp's construction features a spring-armed aluminum body and a machined steel base, equipped with an LED light. This configuration enables its use as a traditional desk lamp, a swing-arm sconce, or a secondary light source for accentuating walls or providing focused spot lighting.
A key feature of the Dedicate Lamp is its wall-mount option, which liberates it from horizontal surfaces. This allows the lamp to be installed on walls or other vertical planes, offering direct and focused illumination where needed. Bentzen also addresses a common issue in modern lighting design: the glare and unflattering light often produced by minimalist LED lampshades. He notes that a significant goal was to design a shade that mitigates these problems, ensuring a more pleasant lighting experience and avoiding discomfort for others in shared spaces. The lamp incorporates a simple push-button switch conveniently located on its die-cast aluminum lamp head.
The Muuto Dedicate Lamp is available in Black or Brown Green and comes in three sizes, with prices ranging from $445 to $549. The four distinct base options further enhance its adaptability, making it a multifaceted lighting system suitable for various residential and commercial applications.
