Do You Decorate Like a Boomer or Gen Z? Designers Define All the Generational Styles

Interior design styles are often influenced by generational shifts in music, culture, and politics, leading to identifiable aesthetic preferences across different age cohorts. This phenomenon is explored through the distinct decorating habits of Baby Boomers, Generation X, Millennials, and Generation Z, with insights from designers Melissa Oholendt of Oho Interiors, Kerry Vasquez, and Amy Vroom of the Residency Bureau. Baby Boomers, born between 1946 and 1964, are associated with furniture that emerged from the post-World War II mass production era. Their homes frequently featured matching furniture sets, often made of dark-stained wood with heavy hardware and elaborate millwork, designed for durability. This generation also embraced "shabby chic" styles in the 1990s, characterized by distressed wood and farmhouse influences, which presented a rustic elegance. This trend was seen by some as a reaction against the high mid-century modern design popular with their parents' generation, favoring a style that appeared relaxed yet could be costly. Generation X, encompassing those born from 1965 to 1980, moved away from the Boomer aesthetic towards a more industrial and eclectic vibe. Their design choices often reflected an interest in urban environments rather than suburban conformity, incorporating elements like raw steel and an all-black palette. This generation's style is described as pulling from a range of influences, emphasizing a mix-and-match approach to create a unique, rebellious look that distinguished them from previous generations. Millennials, born between 1981 and 1996, are credited with popularizing sustainable living and adopting a "less is more" philosophy in their home decor. A defining characteristic of their style is the prevalence of "Millennial pink," a muted shade that became iconic during the "#Girlboss" era. The rise of the internet made their style more diverse and harder to pinpoint, but a consistent theme was an experimental approach to design, often leaning towards "casual elegance" or a "coastal California" aesthetic that maintained popularity for an extended period. Generation Z, born from 1997 to the early 2010s, is still developing its distinct style, but a clear pattern is their desire to differentiate themselves from preceding generations. Their preferences include neon and candy-colored, bubble-shaped furniture, indicating a playful and unconventional approach. While embracing the sustainability values of Millennials, Gen Z also integrates maximalism into their decor, frequently incorporating vintage and thrifted pieces. Additionally, this generation favors "moody academia" with dark paint colors, abundant books, and cozy lamp lighting, often expressing a dislike for overhead illumination. Each generation's design choices are a reflection of their cultural context and personal values, demonstrating how design continuously evolves while sometimes drawing inspiration from past eras. #HomeDecor #InteriorDesign #GenerationalTrends #BabyBoomer #GenX #Millennial #GenZ #DecoratingStyles #HomeDecor #InteriorDesign #GenerationalTrends #BabyBoomer #GenX #Millennial #GenZ #DecoratingStyles
