Zellige Tiles Aren’t Going Anywhere—Designers Share 10 Gorgeous Ways to Use Them for 2026

Zellige tiles, characterized by their glossy finish, rich texture, and handcrafted imperfections, have transitioned from a trend to a timeless design element. These tiles offer a unique depth and character that cannot be replicated by machine-made alternatives. Traditionally favored for kitchen backsplashes and bathroom walls, designers are now exploring innovative applications throughout the home. This article presents ten creative ideas for incorporating zellige tiles, showcasing their versatility and enduring appeal. One application involves using zellige tiles to create striking vertical stripes in a bathroom shower. Nicky Mudie of Violet & George employed a soft blue glaze combined with polished plaster, accented by chocolate brown and oxblood tiles, to introduce a bold and graphic element in a playful manner. This approach transforms a functional shower into a statement piece, adding drama and character to a contemporary design. Another innovative use is making a fireplace a focal point. Amy Dublin-Nash of Lisa & Leroy utilized zellige tile to anchor a narrow room, appreciating its handmade feel and how light reflects off its glossy surface, creating visual dimension. Rather than a bulky mantel, the zellige wraps the fireplace in texture and warmth, conveying elegance and intrigue without overpowering the space. Zellige tiles offer a fresh alternative to traditional subway tile backsplashes. Jennifer Acito of Dama & Wood selected them for a kitchen backsplash to provide an elevated, traditional-leaning look that grounds pink millwork. The handmade tile's uneven lines and tonal variations introduce warmth and texture, resulting in a timeless yet modern backdrop that balances the color palette with sophistication. Color-blocking a shower with zellige tiles can create both a focal point and a functional anchor. The Brownstone Boys design team used shifts in color and texture to define zones, counterbalancing narrow room proportions and drawing the eye. Jordan Slocum notes that this approach creates visual drama while maintaining a restrained palette and clean lines, resulting in a modern classic look that is sculptural and integrated into the home's design. Extending zellige tile beyond the backsplash to cover entire kitchen walls creates a bold, full-coverage effect. Amy Vroom of The Residency Bureau wrapped a Seattle kitchen in rich green zellige, using its texture and warmth to soften the overall look and introduce a handcrafted element. This creates a cohesive, dramatic space that is modern, polished, warm, and unique. In bathrooms, zellige tiles can form a statement wall. Erika Marini of Fixe Design House created a deep zig-zag design behind a vanity, adding graphic impact and aligning with a Mediterranean-coastal aesthetic. This layered and lively yet refined result makes the bathroom suitable for both children and as a stylish lounge space. Zellige tiles can also line floating shelves for a bold and cohesive feature. Abbie Naber of a.Naber Design used cobalt blue zellige in a color-drenched kitchen, ensuring the richly-hued walls were free of tile to allow the shelving detail to stand out and connect to a tiled bar top. This monochrome approach creates a playful, hacienda-inspired look. Framing a shower with a checkerboard border provides a playful twist to classic zellige. Ashley Chavis of Grant & Little used this pattern as a signature element, adding whimsy without overwhelming the space. This detail maintains a textured, organic, and timeless aesthetic. Adopting a tone-on-tone look with zellige tiles creates a dramatic effect. In a Madrid primary bathroom, custom ZIA tiles in layered earth tones provide depth through subtle variations in size, tone, and texture. Richy Almond of Lind + Almond highlights how these variations make the surface tactile and alive, achieving a modern yet traditional feel. Finally, creatively cutting zellige tiles for a standout backsplash can reimagine traditional patterns. Designers for a kitchen backsplash cut zellige tiles into irregular shapes to create a dynamic zig-zag effect, rather than a strict grid. Holly Vaughan of Vaughan Design and Development explains that using soft greens and off-whites balanced the bold pattern with apple-colored cabinetry and pink-paneled walls, enhancing movement in the glossy, handcrafted surface. #ZelligeTiles #HomeDesign #InteriorDecorating #TileIdeas #KitchenDesign #BathroomDesign #FireplaceDesign #TexturalTiles #HandcraftedTiles #ZelligeTiles #HomeDesign #InteriorDecorating #TileIdeas #KitchenDesign #BathroomDesign #FireplaceDesign #TexturalTiles #HandcraftedTiles
