Outdated Tile Trends That Are Going Away In 2025

The year 2025 is ushering in a significant shift in tile trends, moving away from minimalism towards maximalism, with an emphasis on bold colors, unique textures, and personalized designs. Several previously popular tile styles are set to become outdated, prompting homeowners planning renovations to be aware of these changes to avoid incorporating stale styles. A panel of seven design experts provides insights into the trends that are losing favor and those that are gaining traction. Wood-look and marble-look tiles, once popular for their low maintenance and aesthetic appeal, are declining in popularity. Courtney Batten, an NCIDQ-certified interior designer, notes that these options are beginning to feel dated and overly “builder-grade.” Consumers are now opting for authentic materials like real marble or stone tiles, handmade zellige tiles, and hand-painted concrete tiles, which offer unique character, natural textures, and individuality that mass-produced options lack. Neutral tiles, while a long-standing staple, are taking a backseat to bold and joyous colors. Camilla Masi, an interior designer at Otto Tiles & Design, predicts a return to maximalism, with rich saturations and unexpected color combinations dominating. Neutral tones are expected to evolve into earthier, darker, richer, and moodier shades, such as subdued greens, browns, and terracotta, to align with the new aesthetic. This shift will see more impactful designs like bold mosaic feature walls, tile-drenched bathrooms, and checkerboard kitchen floors. Mosaic bands, a common feature in showers and kitchen backsplashes since the 1990s, are also on their way out. Courtney Cole, an interior designer at TileCloud, explains that these singular design elements can appear dated and contrived, especially in smaller bathrooms where they can create a busy, jumbled effect. Homeowners are now seeking more cohesive and dramatic designs, such as full feature walls or seamless large-format tiles, particularly bright-colored ones that can create an illusion of space in compact areas. White subway tiles, a versatile choice for many years, are also losing their prime. Alexey Beliy, Owner of HEX General Contractors, and Courtney Cole agree that the ultra-glossy, stark white versions are beginning to feel sterile and flat. Their high maintenance, as they readily show spills and stains, further contributes to their decline. The trend is moving towards darker tiles, unique patterns, and artisanal options like handcrafted subway tiles with matte or satin finishes and subtle tonal variations, reflecting a desire for more personalized and distinctive home interiors. Cool gray tiles, once considered timeless and versatile, are also getting the boot. Courtney Cole and Russell Diehl of Arizona Network Realty observe that all-gray palettes now feel cold and overdone, with buyers seeking warmer, more inviting spaces. The preference is shifting towards earthy, warm tones like terracotta, muted greens, and soft taupes, which complement biophilic design elements. These shades offer a sense of comfort and timeless style, aligning with current homeowner aspirations. Large-format tiles for flooring, surprisingly, are also nearing their exit despite being a major trend in 2023. Shiva Samiei, interior designer and CEO of SHIVA SAMIEI & Co., states that oversized tiles and monochromatic gray schemes are becoming passé. Clients are increasingly gravitating towards texture, pattern, and color for personalized tile solutions. This includes a strong trend towards smaller format tiles, mixed materials, and bold color combinations, often inspired by Moroccan and Mediterranean handcrafted designs, emphasizing organic shapes and artisanal finishes. Finally, contrasting grout colors, once used to highlight tile patterns, are no longer in vogue. Erika Dale, an interior designer, notes that this trend often results in a cluttered and busy effect that detracts from the tiles rather than enhancing them. The current preference is for matching or subtly contrasting grout shades with the tiles, or even opting for neutral grout, to create a seamless, sleek, and dramatic backdrop. Manufacturers are responding to this trend by introducing a wider range of grout colors and tones. #TileTrends #HomeRenovation #InteriorDesign #Maximalism #BoldColors #AuthenticMaterials #ArtisanalTiles #SustainableDesign #DesignTrends2025 #TileTrends #HomeRenovation #InteriorDesign #Maximalism #BoldColors #AuthenticMaterials #ArtisanalTiles #SustainableDesign #DesignTrends2025
