The country has also been a fertile ground for sustainable architectural experiments, particularly in bamboo and mud construction. Notable examples include the Arc by IBUKU at Green School, Bali, and Realrich Architecture Workshop’s Piyandeling project. These structures, characterized by spectacular, intricate shell-forms and large-scale cascading vaults, are setting new benchmarks for low-tech sustainable architecture. The octagonal foyer, inspired by Taoist cosmology, was intended to bring balance and stability to the irregular landform. From the foyer, access is provided to two bedrooms through oversized solid wood doors, and a glass door opens to the swimming pool. The guest bedroom is situated to the left, adjacent to a staircase leading to the upper floors, while the master bedroom on the right offers direct access to a green-stone swimming pool and a private wooden parquet patio. The master suite includes a walk-in closet connecting to a Balinese semi-outdoor bathroom, which features a freestanding bathtub, a solid wall finish, and a stonescape garden, enhancing the private resort-like ambiance. An outdoor whirlpool is located between the master bedroom and the main pool. The guest bedroom also has an open terrace for entertaining or enjoying sunsets, and its bathroom is equipped with a glass wall shower and a small garden leading to the swimming pool. All bedrooms are finished with wooden parquet floors and adorned with solid wood and natural stone accents. Sala Bang Pa-In is a new island resort by Department of Architecture (DoA), situated on the Chao Phraya River, near Ayutthaya, Thailand. This 43,000-square-foot hotel is the firm's second project for Sala Hospitality Group. The resort's design aims to seamlessly integrate with the surrounding rural river communities while also embracing Thailand's contemporary design future. Co-principals Twitee Vajrabhaya and Amata Luphaiboon emphasized the importance of site sensitivity, ensuring guests appreciate the unique location. Upon arrival, guests check in at a verandalike riverside lobby, designed to mimic the simple, elevated houses common in the neighborhood. This open, casual space features a pitched corrugated fiber-cement roof and is supported by stilts, a traditional flood-evasion technique. The lobby, painted a vibrant red, can also store furniture on its upper story during the rainy season when river levels rise. The choice of red pays homage to historical Thai houses, which were often painted dark brown or red, despite modern villages displaying a kaleidoscope of colors. After checking in, guests cross a 180-foot, bow-shaped fiber-cement footbridge, also red, leading to the island resort. On the island, a much quieter palette of blond woods, creamy paints and fabrics, and leafy greens predominates. This reflects DoA's commitment to minimizing the resort's impact on the island's natural integrity. The arrival deck, for instance, features carefully preserved rain trees emerging through cutouts in the raised fiber-cement planks, designed to protect their roots. A semicircle of terraced seating around these trees creates an amphitheater-like space for guests. The resort occupies the arrowhead-shaped tip of the island, with all 24 guest rooms and villas offering water views. A sequestered inner garden runs down the center of the property. The signature accommodation is a spacious 5,210-square-foot villa at the island's tip, spanning two floors and including living, dining areas, three bedrooms, and a private swimming pool with a 270-degree panorama of the Chao Phraya River. Most furniture throughout the resort is custom-made, featuring honey-tone white-ash pieces indoors and teak outdoors, complemented by rattan tables, chairs, sun lounges, and panels that showcase Thailand's rich wickerwork tradition. Bathroom walls in pool villas are clad in brick tile, echoing the construction methods found in the nearby ancient ruins of Ayutthaya. Another distinctive element is the main restaurant's dramatic, zigzag roof, inspired by traditional Thai Buddhist temple architecture. This tentlike structure consists of conjoined, steeply pitched gables, featuring a light steel framework covered with translucent polyester fabric. This design allows for natural, softened light and facilitates heat escape through carefully positioned gaps, creating an open-wall dining area that seamlessly connects with a riverside dining terrace.
