The property, owned by Sue Chan, a food and beverage multi-hyphenate, required significant structural retrofitting due to its steep hillside location, along with a full gut remodel of its interiors and a roof replacement. The architecture and design firm Only Way Is Up (OWIU), led by Amanda Gunawan and Joel Wong, spearheaded the project with the goal of creating a space that served both as an ideal home office and a tranquil retreat from the bustling city. Chan, who frequently travels between New York and Los Angeles, desired a home that encapsulated the essence of Los Angeles while maintaining a curated environment for work and calm. In response to this brief, the architects conceived a home that pays homage to the imagery of sand dunes and deserts. The residence serves as a canvas for a sophisticated interplay of materials, encompassing two bedrooms, a study lounge, four bathrooms, and a household staff's quarter. To achieve the desired raw desert ambiance, natural sand-based plasters were extensively used. Lime wash was applied to all walls, contributing to the cooling effect characteristic of desert homes. Another textured paint, known as _ghibli_, was incorporated into the main bedroom. Teak wood was utilized as a foundational material throughout the house, forming a robust structural element.
