The Better Homes & Gardens 2023 Color of the Year Is Here
Better Homes & Gardens has unveiled its 2023 Color of the Year: Canyon Ridge, a warm, blushy coral shade inspired by the golden hour glow of a sunset over desert landscapes. This subtle terra-cotta hue, described as more sunbaked clay than cayenne pepper, is considered a versatile near-neutral that is ideal for various home applications. It marks a shift from the dusty green tones of the previous year, maintaining a nature-inspired theme but focusing on the warm palette of red rock formations, akin to those found in Zion National Park.
Canyon Ridge is exclusively available at Walmart, making it accessible for indoor DIY projects. Jessica Thomas, BHG Style and Design Director, suggests pairing Canyon Ridge with bright blue accessories, such as cobalt, for a modern aesthetic. For those preferring a farmhouse style, she recommends darker denim blue accents, while navy can suit traditional decor. The color also creates a serene atmosphere in bedrooms when combined with wood tones and linen bedding. Artist and DIY expert Brittni Mehlhoff notes that various shades of green, from deep forest greens to brighter hues, also complement Canyon Ridge beautifully.
Practical applications of Canyon Ridge within the home are highlighted through several projects. In the October issue of Better Homes & Gardens, Jessica Thomas used Canyon Ridge as a wall color in an entryway, enhanced with an off-white modern stencil pattern. She explains that while it pairs well with cobalt for energy, it can also achieve a serene look with mossy greens or monochromatic earthy tones. DIY expert Nicole Wright from Lazy Haven utilized Canyon Ridge to create a sunburst design on her daughter's bedroom ceiling, inspired by a national park trip. Wright emphasizes the color's adaptability, noting its compatibility with neutral colors like tans and whites, terra cotta elements, and live greenery for a modern southwest feel, as well as its ability to integrate with brighter colors such as pinks and turquoise for a more energetic environment.
Brittni Mehlhoff, from Paper and Stitch, used Canyon Ridge to craft a dramatic piece of wall art for her dining room, expressing that the color evokes happiness, warmth, and invitation. Timisha Porcher of ToolBox Divas applied Canyon Ridge to a built-in window seat, transforming an empty kitchen corner into a bold focal point. Porcher recommends it as an excellent accent color for cabinets, particularly in spaces needing to be brightened. These examples demonstrate the diverse ways Canyon Ridge can be integrated into home decor, offering both versatility and a comforting, vibrant touch to any space. The article encourages readers to explore this vibrant color for their own DIY projects or to paint an entire room, promising a cozy and warm transformation.
