The ITSUMO Dessert Shop in Batam, Indonesia, designed by kousou inc. Situated in a bustling port city, the design intentionally contrasts with the surrounding utilitarian structures and the rapid-development aesthetic characterized by colorful and artificial materials. The shop features a minimalist white facade, which serves as a visual counterpoint to its environment and signals a transition to a more serene and restrained interior experience. A central element of the design is an interior courtyard, strategically incorporated to introduce natural light and controlled exposure to rain. This courtyard functions as both a spatial and an environmental component, enhancing natural ventilation and establishing a direct sensory connection with external weather conditions. Ingenious hidden rain gutters, positioned between the facade wall and a skylight, allow rainwater to gracefully enter the courtyard during storms, while a secondary concealed channel efficiently manages drainage.
