How to make your bedroom look more luxe – 6 tips for designing the ultimate space of your dreams
Achieving a luxurious, hotel-like atmosphere in a bedroom doesn't require a complete overhaul or significant expense; instead, it can be accomplished through strategic design choices and the incorporation of specific decor elements. Interior design experts suggest several methods to elevate a bedroom's aesthetic, making it feel more opulent and sophisticated.
One effective technique is wall paneling. While historically traditional, modern applications of paneling can add texture, depth, and character to a room. Whether painted or wallpapered, panels introduce a sense of luxury. For a contemporary twist, panels can be installed horizontally to visually extend the room's height and create a three-dimensional effect. This method, as noted by Gert Noël, founder of Noël & Marquet, can accentuate architectural lines and enhance the perception of space, particularly in apartments with high ceilings.
Another impactful approach is 'color drenching,' which involves painting walls and ceilings the same color. This creates a cohesive and calming environment, reminiscent of being immersed in a single hue, like a tranquil pool or a lush forest. When selecting colors for this technique, it's crucial to choose shades that are visually pleasing and avoid making the space feel confined or overly dark. Soft tones such as sage green, sky blue, light grey, and soft pink are recommended. According to Elly Lok Tung Chan of Note Design Studio, a color palette carefully chosen based on existing architectural features and original finishes can result in a harmonious and rich color experience. Shona McElroy of Smac Studio emphasizes creating tonal unity in bedrooms for a cohesive and serene feel, extending the chosen color to headboards, rugs, and cushions. Limewash paint is also suggested for its ability to add depth and character, further enhancing the luxurious effect.
Incorporating an eye-catching chandelier is a direct route to luxury. The size and illumination provided by a statement lighting fixture can dramatically transform a room. Arjun Rathi of Arjun Rathi Design highlights how custom-designed chandeliers, like his Umbrella Chandelier, can blend modern aesthetics with functional and ambient lighting. Beyond chandeliers, wall-mounted lights on either side of the bed are advised by designers Jen and Mar of Interior Fox. This not only offers a high-end look by freeing up bedside table space but also contributes to sophisticated layered lighting.
Designing an architectural ceiling molding can infuse a room with a regal and antiquated charm, especially beneficial for modern buildings lacking such decorative features. Crown moldings add texture, depth, and character, reminiscent of vintage homes. For an even more elaborate touch, pairing the molding with a gold leaf wallpaper or a Victorian-inspired design, and utilizing a jewel-tone palette with colors like purple, maroon, or emerald green, can create an exceptionally high-end ambiance.
Creating a dedicated lounging space within the bedroom mirrors the comfort and luxury found in hotel rooms. This can range from two sofas and a coffee table in larger rooms to simply two comfortable chairs in smaller spaces. Lindye Galloway, founder of Lindye Galloway Studio + Shop, suggests opting for functional yet stylish furniture, such as a small bench at the foot of the bed, to provide extra seating without occupying much space.
Finally, boosting dimensions with a large, vintage mirror is an elegant and practical tip. Floor-installed, oversized mirrors with ornate frames not only serve as decorative elements but also enhance natural light and create the illusion of a larger room. For an elevated look, a vintage-style mirror can be painted in a modern color like black or blue to complement a contemporary aesthetic while maintaining its unique character. Brittany Farinas of House of One explains that intentionally selected mirrors can blend contemporary and vintage furnishings, contributing to a cohesive and calming color palette through layered shades.
