Haus of Hommeboys, founded by Austin Carrier and Alex Mutter-Rottmayer, is a new custom millwork, cabinetry, and furniture atelier launched as an organic extension of their interior design firm, Hommeboys Interiors. The duo, who met at Evergreen State College, share a deep passion for furniture and design, with Carrier having studied architecture and furniture design, and Mutter-Rottmayer having grown up in a woodshop environment. This shared background led them to constantly create and prototype furniture, often crafting custom pieces for their own rented spaces and later gifting them to friends. The positive reception and recurring inquiries about their unique designs from clients prompted them to formalize their furniture-making endeavors. The co-founders recognized a gap in the market for specific, artistic furniture pieces that aligned with their vision for interior spaces. They saw their new venture as a creative outlet, allowing them to design and produce the furniture they couldn't readily find for their clients and themselves. Their existing operational millwork and cabinet studio facilitated a smooth transition into furniture design, enabling them to bring their concepts to life efficiently. The inaugural collection from Haus of Hommeboys, titled 'Ocotillo,' draws profound inspiration from the natural landscape of Sonoma, California, where their studio is located. The collection's aesthetic is a direct reflection of the region's distinctive environment, particularly the golden hills of Northern California and the stark, ebony veining left by recent wildfires. The founders describe how the rich gold color of the native grasses, visible from their barn apartment, juxtaposes with the dark, ashy scars on the landscape, forming the core visual and emotional foundation for 'Ocotillo.' To translate this inspiration into tangible furniture, the 'Ocotillo' collection utilizes western red cedar, a wood native to California and the west coast, known for its rustic texture. The pieces are finished with a deep ebony stain, intentionally chosen to mimic the ashy marks left by fires on the local terrain. This combination of natural materials and specific finishes aims to capture the essence of the Californian landscape, merging its peak golden hues with the somber aftermath of wildfires. The collection represents the first of three planned furniture collections, indicating a continuous exploration of their design philosophy.
