
Franklin Home Power Battery Review: Not the Cheapest, but It Gets the Job Done
The Franklin Home Power (FHP) battery system, produced by FranklinWH, a company established in 2019, offers a robust solution for home energy backup. Released to the market in 2022, the FHP system is already widely available across the United States. While initially focused on providing backup power during grid outages, FranklinWH has also started to emphasize its capability for time-of-use rate offsetting, allowing homeowners to reduce electricity costs by managing energy consumption during peak pricing periods. The company asserts that its primary objective remains ensuring continuous power supply during outages, as stated by Josh Brooks of FranklinWH's service engineering team.
The FHP system features a substantial 13.6 kWh energy storage capacity, with impressive performance specifications and a 12-year warranty, which is longer than the industry standard of 10 years for most batteries. Its peak power output is a robust 10 kW, essential for starting high-load appliances like air conditioning units after a blackout. However, its continuous power output of 5 kW is comparatively lower than some newer residential batteries, which can offer 7 kW to 9 kW continuously. The battery boasts an 89% round-trip efficiency, meaning 11% of energy is lost during storage and retrieval, which is close to the industry average of 90%. Additionally, it has a 100% depth of discharge rating, allowing full use of its capacity without risking damage, though complete drainage is not recommended for battery longevity.
The system comprises two main components: the aPower and the aGate. The aPower is the unit housing the battery and an AC-coupled inverter, converting DC electricity from solar panels into usable AC power for the home. The aGate acts as a central hub, connecting the grid, solar panels, and energy management components, and includes an automatic transfer switch for seamless transition to backup mode during outages. The system is AC-coupled, making it compatible with both new and existing solar installations, and can function as a standalone backup power source even without solar panels, though it is optimized for solar integration.
While a single aPower unit offers 13.6 kWh, up to 15 units can be installed for a total of 204 kWh, though such a large capacity is typically beyond residential needs. The FHP system is not modular in the sense of incremental capacity additions; rather, additional 13.6 kWh units must be purchased, which can be costly. The warranty guarantees 70% capacity retention after 12 years or 43 MWh of energy throughput, whichever comes first.
The FranklinWH app provides users with monitoring capabilities for solar production and home energy consumption, historical data, and three operating modes: backup standby, self-consumption, and load shifting. Customer support is available via phone or online ticket, with installers being the primary point of contact. The main drawback of the FHP system is its high cost, averaging around $18,000 including taxes and installation, making it more expensive than comparable 13.5 kWh batteries like the Tesla Powerwall, which ranges from $9,000 to $13,000. Consumers are advised to obtain multiple quotes from various installers to potentially reduce costs and find the best battery solution for their specific energy needs and budget.
