The increasing focus on sustainability has become a dominant trend in interior design, extending to every room in the house, especially the bathroom. While modern fixtures like low-water showers and toilets contribute to eco-friendliness, the choice of flooring also plays a significant role in reducing a home's carbon footprint and enhancing its overall design. This article explores seven sustainable bathroom flooring options, combining surprising new finds with classic materials, all endorsed by design experts for their beauty and environmental benefits.
Reclaimed wood offers a rustic charm, being wood previously used in construction and given a new life. Unlike recycled or salvaged wood, reclaimed wood is celebrated for its unique character and sustainability through up-cycling. Alex Main, director at The Main Company, emphasizes the importance of engineered reclaimed wood for durability and compatibility with underfloor heating, ideal for bathrooms. Each plank brings a unique story and texture, adding distinctiveness to the space.
Cork, beyond its common uses, provides an earthy and natural aesthetic for bathrooms. Eric Kotlyar, a design contractor at True Form, highlights that cork is harvested from the bark of cork oak trees without harming the tree, and this process actually boosts the tree's CO2 absorption. Cork is naturally resistant to mold and mildew, making it suitable for damp bathroom environments, especially when top-coated with a low-VOC finish to prevent water seepage.
Recycled glass tiles present a modern and eco-friendly option. These tiles are made from post-consumer products like bottles and windows, resulting in a non-porous, stain-resistant surface. Their reflective quality can also enhance small bathrooms by distributing extra light, making them both sustainable and functional for aesthetic purposes.
Microcement has emerged as a popular material, particularly in Mediterranean-inspired designs. Holly, co-founder of Holt Living, notes its seamless and tactile alternative to traditional tiles. It is durable, can be applied over existing surfaces (reducing demolition waste), and is used in thin layers, contributing to its sustainability. However, the environmental impact of cement production necessitates choosing eco-friendly formulas.
Recycled porcelain tiles are another sustainable favorite, created from offcuts and waste materials. Many major bathroom brands offer these low-impact, hard-wearing, and versatile tiles, often made from at least 50% recycled content. These tiles are practical for high-traffic areas and allow for personal expression in design.
Bamboo is a highly sustainable material due to its rapid growth rate, making it easily renewable. Paul Hambidge, founder of Factory Direct Flooring, points out that bamboo flooring is more moisture-resistant than other wood types, making it suitable for bathrooms when pre-treated and lacquered to prevent water damage. However, consumers should research manufacturers to ensure the product is free from toxins.
Finally, terrazzo is highlighted as a long-standing sustainable choice. Grazzie Wilson, head of creative at Ca’ Pietra, explains that terrazzo is born from reusing marble and stone chips that would otherwise be discarded, binding them with concrete into a dense, durable surface. This material not only reduces waste but also provides a long-lasting and aesthetically striking flooring option. When sealed, terrazzo resists water, works with underfloor heating, and is easy to maintain with pH-neutral cleaners, ensuring its longevity and timeless appeal.
