IKEA hides a Sonos speaker inside the SYMFONISK picture frame
IKEA and Sonos have collaborated to release a new "Symfonisk" speaker, designed to seamlessly integrate into home decor rather than standing out as a visible technological device. This innovative product takes the form of a picture frame, embodying both aesthetic and acoustic functions. While labeled a "picture frame," the Symfonisk unit does not allow for personal photo display. Instead, it features a decorated material, likely perforated to facilitate sound projection, functioning as an art piece within a living space.
The design ethos behind the Symfonisk picture frame emphasizes versatility in placement. Users can choose to hang it on a wall, either as a standalone artistic element or integrated with other decorative items. Alternatively, it can be placed on the floor or leaned against a wall, offering flexible arrangement options within a room. For those seeking a more expansive audio experience, multiple Symfonisk devices can be daisy-chained together, requiring only a single power cord for the entire setup.
The Symfonisk picture frame measures 22 inches in height, 16 inches in width, and 2 inches in depth. It is offered with a choice of black or white finishes for the frame and supports various interchangeable fronts, allowing for customization to suit different interior aesthetics. The speaker is engineered to be hung in either portrait or landscape orientation, utilizing a magnetic hook system. Its design, however, transcends the traditional wall-mounted picture frame, encouraging alternative placements such as leaning on a shelf or resting on the floor.
Technologically, the Symfonisk picture frame incorporates Apple's AirPlay 2, enabling seamless streaming capabilities. It also supports stereo pairings, allowing users to configure two units for enhanced sound or to serve as rear surrounds when integrated with a Sonos Arc or Beam soundbar. Physical controls for the device are discreetly located on the back of the frame, alongside the IKEA and Sonos branding.
This new picture frame speaker expands the existing IKEA/Sonos Collection, which already includes other cleverly disguised audio solutions. Notable predecessors in this line are the Ikea Symfonisk bookshelf speaker, which doubles as functional shelving, and the Ikea Symfonisk lamp, which combines ambient lighting with integrated audio. The collaboration between IKEA and Sonos consistently aims to merge functional technology with home aesthetics, providing discreet yet powerful sound solutions for contemporary living spaces.
